Brad Sugars is the founder and CEO of ActionCOACH, one of the world's largest business education companies, with roughly 1,000 offices in more than 80 countries and $2.7 billion in total sales. He has spent more than three decades coaching entrepreneurs and business leaders to build scalable, profitable companies through systems, accountability, and leadership development. His definition of a business is deliberately narrow: a commercial profitable enterprise that works without you. If you have to be there, it isn't a business yet — it's a job.

He started in 1993, when Robert Kiyosaki put him on a stage in Hawaii at 20 years old and he discovered he loved teaching. ActionCOACH now runs clients through ACBOS, the ActionCOACH Business Operating System, built around six stages: mastery, marketing, systems, team, scaling, and freedom. He is the author of Billionaire in Training, the host of The 100 Million Entrepreneur podcast, and has written numerous books on business growth, wealth creation, and entrepreneurship. His company also delivers coaching through software, including APEX, its planning and execution system.

On The Daily Mastermind, Brad joined George Wright III for a conversation on how owners stop being the bottleneck in their own companies. They covered the three phases from manager to leader of leaders, the five marketing numbers most owners can't recite, why chaos and genius are the two things you cannot scale, and how to turn routine work into checklists and documented systems. They also got into the difference between a profitable business and a sellable asset. Brad's closing point: the goal isn't a bigger business, it's a better one — an asset that produces freedom whether you're in the room or not.

Key takeaways from Brad

01
If you have to be there, it's a job, not a business.
Sugars defines a business as a commercial profitable enterprise that works without you. Hustle gets a company to a few hundred thousand in revenue, then the owner who was the hub becomes the bottleneck. Breaking through requires personal growth and letting go, not more effort.
02
You cannot scale chaos and you cannot scale genius.
Chaos shows up as complexity — Steve Jobs cut Apple from 300+ products to fewer than 20 before growth. Genius is harder because it's usually yours. ActionCOACH stalled near $140 million a year until delivery stopped depending on exceptional coaches.
03
You start with profitability. You don't grow into it.
Mastery is the first stage for a reason: get control of the business so it stops running you. Sugars is blunt that companies waiting to grow into profit never arrive. Build the profit first, then add growth on top of it.
04
Where execution is lacking, accountability is lacking.
If you're both owner and CEO, nobody holds you accountable beyond paying the bills, so you do a bad job at both. Sugars keeps three coaches — mindset, financial, and business — and notes that everyone trains twice as hard when a coach is in the room.
05
A basic system is just a checklist.
Pilots train relentlessly and still run a pre-flight check. Systematize what happens most often, digitize your documents into an AI brain, then record your best people doing the work and let AI write the system. Start with how you get and keep customers.
