In this episode, George Wright III digs into “hacks for the mind,” sharing how to win the daily mental battle that quietly limits our goals, relationships, and businesses. Drawing on lessons from David Goggins and his own recent challenges, George explains why most of us quit at just 40% of our capacity—and exactly how to push past that threshold to create momentum, resilience, and real fulfillment. If you’ve been cycling through the same struggles, this is your blueprint for taking back the steering wheel.
Welcome back to The Daily Mastermind. My name’s George Wright III. I’m your host, and I hope you’re having a good day. Let’s start with the Daily Mastermind mobile app quote of the day from Steve Harvey: “No matter what happens to you, it ain’t over.” No matter what happens, it isn’t over.
How’s your week going so far? Are you attacking your goals, kicking butt and taking names, or dealing with the same old issues? Do you feel stuck, or on track? More often than not, most people cycle through the same problems. I’ve been there. These problems are almost entirely struggles of the mind—patterns of thought and perspective that keep repeating. Sure, there are real obstacles outside your control, but most of what weighs you down lives in your head.
So this week I’m focusing on specific hacks for the mind. The daily battle with your mind is the battle you must learn to win if you’re going to live your best life. I’ve been navigating some tough personal situations lately, and I’ve leaned on mentors and past lessons for perspective and tools that work. I’m going to share those with you all week. Let me do the legwork and offer you ideas, tips, and frameworks that have helped me keep my head clear and my actions strong.
When I start to struggle, there are mentors I go to right away because I know they help me reset perspective and get back on top of my life. David Goggins is at the top of that list. If you don’t know Goggins, I won’t go deep into his background, but here’s the short version: he once weighed 297 pounds, lost over 100 just to qualify for military service, completed boot camp in three different branches including the Navy SEALs, and became an ultra-endurance athlete. He’s developed an extraordinary ability to get past the mind’s limits and access his best.
One of his core ideas is that most people operate at only about 40% of their capacity. In other words, we tend to quit at 40%—in business, fitness, relationships—long before our real limits. He uses a great analogy: the car with a governor. If you’ve driven a rental car with a governor, you know it won’t go above a set speed even though the engine can. The governor artificially caps performance.
Your brain does the same thing. It’s designed to keep you safe and comfortable, so when difficulty shows up, it sends signals to slow down, walk away, or settle. The problem is that this “safety system” usually trips at around 40% of your potential. That’s wild, because your mind is your greatest tool for creating your life—and it’s also your biggest obstacle. It even knows your weaknesses and the exact language to use to lower your confidence, dial up your fear, and convince you to quit.
Here’s the key: you are not your mind. You control your mind.
You are the driver of this incredible tool. The mistake most of us make is letting go of the wheel. We let our minds run the show, and we quit at 40%. Do that often enough and you build habits of giving up, being lazy, or settling. You convince yourself that comfort is safer. You coast. How many days feel like you’re just going through the motions, waiting for a break, waiting for something to change?
Why does this happen? Because we crave comfort, and because we often can’t see solutions in the moment, we decide to stop. That’s the inflection point you must learn to handle differently.
Right at the point you typically quit, you must give yourself the most hope. The answers you need are on the other side of that 40% mark. Prosperity Pillar #3 says, “I act in spite of my mood.” That’s not “I act when I feel like it.” It’s “I act especially when I don’t.”
Goggins emphasizes that it’s at the 40% level—right where you want to stop—that you actually create new habits and discover new solutions. That’s when the brain becomes creative. Not when you feel great. Not when it’s easy. In the moment of discomfort, your mind can evolve, if you don’t shut it down.
Your brain is tricky; it knows your weak spots and steers you toward the easy path. But it can also be your ally once you decide you won’t quit. When you declare, “I’m not stopping,” your brain doesn’t power down—it powers up. It goes into problem-solving mode. In survival mode, your brain gets resourceful.
Eric Thomas says, “When you want to succeed as bad as you want to breathe, then you’ll be successful.” I used to hear that as “want it really badly.” But think about breathing: when you need air, you will find a way. That’s the switch. Stop obsessing over finding the perfect solution first; focus on not giving up, and let your brain go to work.
You can build this habit. Accept that you’ll be battling your mind your whole life—then turn the battle into a game. This is where it gets fulfilling. We’ve been searching for happiness in all the wrong places: the perfect moment, the perfect post, the comfortable path. But you don’t build toughness, resilience, or deep satisfaction in comfort. That’s why Goggins seeks discomfort daily. Your greatest rewards live there.
Science backs this up. You get dopamine hits—the brain’s reward signal—when you overcome small challenges. Lose a couple of pounds? Your brain rewards the effort before you hit your ultimate goal. Push a project forward? Same thing. Shift your focus to progress and you’ll feel satisfaction now, not just “someday.”
Victory lies in the smallest steps. You’ll experience your best life by choosing to place yourself inside the battle—beyond the 40% mark.
Here are a few ways to do that:
Visualize what it will feel like beyond the quitting point. Picture the end result, feel it clearly, and let those emotions pull you forward. Your emotions are what you’re after anyway.
Detach your fulfillment from external markers. Lasting happiness and meaning come from internal emotions, not from things outside you. You can experience those emotions now, along the way, as you meet small challenges.
Find a driver that genuinely moves you. Maybe it’s positive motivation. Maybe it’s competition. Or maybe—as Goggins often does—you use your past failures as fuel to prove to yourself that you aren’t that person anymore.
Remember Ed Mylett’s mantra in the gym: “One more rep.” The transformation is in the last rep—the extra mile—the moment you would normally stop. That’s the 40% line in action.
Don’t wait for a trainer, coach, or new tool. Your mind might create problems, but it also holds the power to solve them. Use what you have, where you are, right now.
Ultimately, we’re all seeking emotions we believe accomplishments will give us. The secret is that you can feel those emotions today, through consistent, small wins and by refusing to quit at 40%. Visualize the wins. Recognize and appreciate them. Live beyond the 40%. Live in the gaps most people ignore. Never quit on your relationships, your business, your fitness, or your deepest desires. Battle your mind daily. Make it an exercise in uncovering your greatness.
Look forward to the battle. Make it a game. Challenge yourself on purpose so you can live the life you’re capable of living—past the 40% mark and into your true potential. Your brain will help you find the tools and the path when you commit to staying in the fight. Your thoughts create your life, and you are the one steering.
I hope this gives you real food for thought and a clear way to approach the week. Challenge yourself to push past that 40% mark today. Share this with a friend who might be struggling, and let’s keep spreading the message. My name’s George Wright III, and this has been The Daily Mastermind. Have a great day.
