What truly makes people happy—and can you influence it? In this episode of The Daily Mastermind, George Wright III shares a formula from his mentor Robert Stuberg that breaks happiness down into three controllable components: Genetics, Environment, and Thinking. Discover how you can influence each area to raise your happiness levels, and why doing so can create a powerful ripple effect on your success, productivity, and relationships.
Welcome back to The Daily Mastermind. George Wright III here with your daily dose of inspiration, motivation, and education. Let’s get started with the Daily Mastermind Quote of the Day, from Warren Buffett:
“In the world of business, the people who are most successful are those who are doing what they love.”
This comes from a billionaire who knows what it takes—doing what you love puts you in your zone of passion and excellence. When you spend more time operating in that space, you’re more productive, more excited, and you get better results.
Think about what you’re doing daily. What’s your unique talent? Where do your passions and skills intersect? That’s the sweet spot. The more time you can spend working in that area, the more energy, joy, and achievement you’ll experience.
Earlier this week, we discussed how happiness and success are not the same. Many people believe that achieving success will automatically bring happiness, but they’re separate emotions. In fact, happiness often resists being chased—it’s attracted by the person you become through growth and self-improvement.
We asked some key questions:
Ultimately, we concluded that happiness comes from designing a plan and executing it—not from simply reaching milestones.
One of my mentors, Robert Stuberg, taught me the “GET Happy Formula.” GET stands for Genetics, Environment, and Thinking.
The formula:
Happiness = Genetics + Environment + Thinking
While genetics plays a role in your natural happiness set point, you can still influence it. The same goes for your environment and—most importantly—your thinking. Let’s break each one down.
You may not be able to change your DNA, but you can influence your physical and mental state through lifestyle choices.
The key is to stop reacting to “the hand you’ve been dealt” and proactively make choices to improve what you can.
Your environment—both physical and mental—shapes your happiness more than you think. Even if you’re in a challenging situation, you can still influence key aspects:
Your environment is largely what you allow around you. Be intentional.
Of the three components, thinking is the one you control most directly. Your mindset—your philosophy of life—determines how you perceive events.
Remember: events themselves have no inherent meaning; only the meaning you give them matters.
To improve your thinking:
To raise your happiness levels, work daily to influence your Genetics, Environment, and Thinking. These areas are within your control if you focus on the set points—inputs and habits—that shape them.
Remember:
Happiness is not having what you want. Happiness is wanting what you have.
When you take responsibility for influencing these three areas, you empower yourself. Happiness increases, success compounds, and the right people and opportunities start coming your way.
Tomorrow, we’ll dive into four specific happiness components you can directly control: Physical, Intellectual, Emotional, and Spiritual. These will give you more practical ways to raise your happiness levels.
