Building Confidence: Strategies to Develop a Stronger Belief in Yourself

Listen

George Wright III opens this solo episode of The Daily Mastermind with a quote from Marcus Garvey: "If you have no confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life." It is a line that cuts to the heart of what holds so many people back from the success, relationships, and lifestyle they want.

Confidence is not a personality trait you are born with or without. George defines it as a belief in yourself, a conviction that you can meet life's challenges and succeed, paired with the willingness to act on that belief. In this episode, he lays out both the forces eroding your confidence and the practical techniques you can use to rebuild it.

What Is Stealing Your Confidence

Before you can grow confidence, you have to identify what is tearing it down. George outlines six culprits:

1. Limiting beliefs. What you tell yourself eventually determines your confidence level. Thoughts like "this always happens to me" or "I'm never good at that" chip away at your self-worth whether you are conscious of them or not. 2. Over-expectations. Setting unrealistic expectations creates a pattern of perceived failure. Each time reality falls short of an inflated expectation, your confidence takes a hit. 3. Your social circle. Surrounding yourself with negative, doubting, or unsupportive people will eventually rub off on you. The people you spend the most time with shape your internal narrative. 4. Past failures. Replaying past failures keeps them alive as confidence killers. A failure is only a learning experience if you process it and move on; dwelling on it is corrosive. 5. Lack of knowledge. When you have not developed mastery in a skill, uncertainty breeds fear, and fear breeds low confidence. 6. Fear of the unknown. George calls this a "silent killer." The uncertainty of what might happen holds you back from the actions that would build genuine confidence.

When you lack knowledge, you will lack confidence. Period.

How Body Language Shapes Your Internal State

One of George's most practical insights is that confidence is a state you can manufacture, not just a feeling you wait for. Your physical posture directly affects your emotional and mental state. Standing tall with your shoulders back does not just look confident to others; it signals confidence to your own brain.

He mentions a technique used by speakers: right before taking the stage, they strike what he calls the "Superman pose," hands on hips, chest out, shoulders back. That single physical act begins shifting the internal state before a word is spoken.

Why Positivity and Emotional Control Drive Confidence

A positive attitude is not wishful thinking; it is a practical confidence tool. When you train your perspective to find the win in every situation, you interrupt the pattern of expecting failure. George describes this as adopting a belief that "things are going to work out" as a default orientation.

Emotional control works alongside positivity. When you identify the emotions that fuel your best performance, such as excitement or passion, and you build discipline around sustaining them, your confidence rises. You become less reactive and more grounded.

Interestingly, once you start projecting confidence and taking actions that appear confident, your brain will also start to reprogram and you will truly become a confident person.

The Power of a Growth Mindset

A growth mindset is the belief that you can handle whatever comes. George makes this concrete: think about every difficult situation you have already navigated. Even the ones that were hard, even the ones you are still working through, you got through them.

That evidence is already inside you. A growth mindset says, "I don't know what to do yet, but I will figure it out." That conviction creates a stable internal platform, and from that platform, confidence grows.

Staying in Your Unique Talents and Abilities

Confidence also comes from playing in your zone of excellence. When you spend time on the things you are genuinely skilled at and passionate about, you naturally operate from a position of competence and enthusiasm. George calls this staying inside your unique talents and abilities, and he frames it as both a strategy and a daily practice.

Action Steps

  • Identify one limiting belief that has been quietly undermining your confidence and write it down. Name it so you can challenge it.
  • Audit your social circle. Are the people closest to you supportive and growth-oriented, or are they feeding doubt?
  • Use the body language technique before your next high-stakes moment. Stand tall, shoulders back, and hold the posture for a few seconds before you walk in.
  • Stop replaying one past failure you have been revisiting. Make a deliberate decision to extract the lesson and set it down.
  • Invest in developing a skill where you feel uncertain. Knowledge is a direct confidence builder.

Confidence is not a destination you reach. It is a state you create, refine, and reinforce every day. As George puts it, acting confident and being confident will create confidence. It is never too late to start living the life you were meant to live.

Welcome back to The Daily Mastermind. George Wright III here with your daily dose of inspiration, motivation, and education. We've got a super full week planned for you this week. We're going to be doing whatever we can to help you to unleash your true potential and grow on a personal level and also grow your business, your success, your lifestyle, everything that it is you're trying to create in your life. And so we're going to be talking about how to grow your mind, your body, your finances, your money, your business, and even your lifestyle. So today we're going to be talking about mindset. And I want to start you with the mastermind quote of the day. It's from Marcus Garvey. And the quote is, if you have no confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life. If you have no confidence in self, you are twice defeated in the race of life. And I think that's a great quote because it also sets up the topic for today, which is confidence. Confidence is something that so many people have been kind of asking about lately. Like, how do you create more confidence? How do you increase your confidence in business, in life, in relationships? And the bottom line is confidence is something that's going to help you to be able to get more results and have more success. It's going to help you to step into your fears. It's going to help you to step past your comfort zone. And so confidence is really a key. And, you know, at the end of the day, confidence is just a belief in yourself. It's that conviction that you have the ability to meet life's challenges and to be able to succeed. And it's that willingness to act like you have confidence in yourself. And being confident, it's really going to be this sense of your own personal internal capability and self-worth. And I really feel like developing confidence is something that you have to have as a core principle in your life. So why is it so important? Well, being confident helps you to make instant connections and build relationships so that you can help to effectively handle any kind of conflict in your life. And projecting your confidence is going to help you to add credibility. It's going to help you to make strong first impressions, deal with pressure, tackle personal and professional challenges. And it's also a really attractive trait. You know what it's like when you're around confident people. They're the people that you want to be around. They're the people that you really look up to. They're the people that you really feel you can learn from. And so having confidence is a very important trait for you to have in business and personal life and so on So I going to give you six things that I think or reasons that I think keep you from being more confident. These are the things that I think if you can learn to identify in your life, you can really increase your confidence. They're the things that are holding you back. Number one, you're limiting beliefs. Now, what you do tell yourself eventually undermines or determines your confidence level. And limiting beliefs are those beliefs that you feel like you have come to accept in your life. This always happens to me. I'm never good at that. And these might be conscious or subconscious limiting beliefs. And we're going to have to have a whole other episode to dig deep into this. But your limiting beliefs that you have about money, about success, about your life, about you as an individual, those beliefs are going to wear away at your confidence. And so it's important you identify those. Second, your expectations. whenever you over expect things it's going to lead to underperforming so when you have a high expectation i'm not saying you shouldn't have high expectations but when you over expect what you want in life or what you expect not desire but expect to get in life then they come across as losses so when you don't achieve those expectations those losses start to whack away and cut away at your confidence level. So your expectations are things you really need to clearly identify and understand are affecting your confidence. The third thing that's affecting your confidence is your social circle. If you are in the company of negative people, people that are doubters, people that don't support you, it's eventually going to rub off on your confidence. When people that you are around are not the positive, supportive people that you need in your life, that is something that's going to prevent you from increasing your confidence. So I highly recommend that you identify your social circle. So limiting beliefs, expectations, and social circle. The fourth thing is past failures. Recognize and accept the fact that your past failures are keeping you from moving forward and gaining confidence in your life if you continue to dwell on them. You have to stop replaying those failures in your life because they're not just a learning experience if you replay them. They're wearing away at your confidence, so your past failures. Fifth, your lack of knowledge. When you lack knowledge and you don't develop and spend time creating and mastering your skill, uncertainty and incompetence is going to create fear and it going to create lack of confidence When you lack knowledge you will lack confidence period And then the final thing that I think affects your confidence is the unknown Fear of the unknown is a silent killer of your confidence. And the reason I give you these six factors, limiting beliefs, expectations, social circle, past failures, lack of knowledge, and the unknown. The reason I give you these is because so many of you are trying to do things to create more confidence, but you're not identifying the things that are keeping you from having confidence or wearing away or lowering your confidence. It's just as important to identify these factors as it is the things that can help you create confidence. So now that I've outlined that to you, I want to talk to you about some principles that I believe can help you to create confidence. These are the things you can do on a day-to-day, week-to-week basis and what you're doing that'll help you to create confidence. So if you want to learn how to be more confident, I believe you've got to learn to change your state your state of being your state is essentially your mood that you give At any kind of time of the day, right? So you're in this State where you're positive the state where you're negative the state where you're confident, right? You've got to change. I believe if you change your state your physical mental emotional state You can become more confident. These are things these are techniques you can use to literally create a state of confidence so let's talk about them number one your body language your body posture affects you emotionally and mentally not just physically so you know you notice confident people stand up straight they've got their shoulders back they walk with a sense of confidence just literally creating that physical posture will help to affect you emotionally and mentally so your body language and your state of your body can absolutely affect your confidence that's why there's this little technique that a lot of speakers I've had thousands of speakers over the years working for me, they'll use this technique where right before they go up, they literally throw their shoulders back. They call it kind of the Superman pose where you put your hands on your hips and you stand back and you push your chest out and just standing that way will help you to be more confident. Another thing that can help you to change your state is positivity. Your attitude and perspective absolutely will affect you and your confidence. So if you start to adopt a positive attitude, positive perspective, things are going to work out, there's a win in every situation, all of the prosperity pillars, your positivity will help you to create a state of confidence. Also, emotional control. When you can learn to be emotionally in control identify those key emotions and create discipline around them When you create emotions that are positive your confidence and your state of confidence will increase. So identify what those emotions are that'll help you. Maybe it's excitement, it's passion, it's movement, whatever it is. Those emotional control elements will help you to be positive and be more confident. Also, having a growth mindset. See, when you know in your mind, you adopt and accept the fact that you can handle anything, which you can, think about it. Think about all the difficult situations you've had in your life that you've overcome. Even if it was a struggle, even if it was hard, even if you're still dealing with it, you got through it. You got through it. That's having a growth mindset, knowing that you can grow through anything. That is gonna help to affect your state. When you can tell yourself, I have the mindset, I'm gonna make this work. I'm gonna make it happen. I can handle anything, Even if I don't know what to do or how to do it, I'll figure it out. That growth mindset will create a state of confidence. And then finally, stay inside your unique talents. When you create a state that keeps you focused on the things that you are excellent and passionate about, things that you're really good at, that you love to do, that's going to create a state of confidence. It's going to create an environment of confidence. So follow me here when I say this, and I just kind of want to review that we talked about here. Confidence is so key to you not only fulfilling, creating happiness, and having your best life ever, but you've got to learn those ways to identify what's where and where your confidence, as well as the techniques and strategies you can use to grow your confidence and create a confident state. Interestingly, once you start projecting confidence and taking actions that appear confident, your brain will also start to reprogram and you will truly become a confident person. What you're going to find is that acting confident, being confident will create confidence. So that's my message for today. I hope it's something that'll really help you.
