Your Energy Is the Asset That Makes Everything Else Possible

Watch
Listen

Most entrepreneurs are obsessive about protecting their assets. Money, business, investments, opportunities, relationships — we track all of it. But there's one asset that makes every other asset possible, and it's the one we take for granted the most: your energy. In this solo episode of The Daily Mastermind, George Wright III makes the case that energy management for entrepreneurs isn't a wellness topic — it's a business strategy.

It doesn't matter how brilliant your strategy is if you don't have the energy to execute it. It doesn't matter how many opportunities land in your lap if you're too tired to pursue them. And it doesn't matter how successful you become if you're too depleted to actually enjoy the life you built. Here's how to think about energy as a competitive advantage instead of an afterthought.

Why Energy Is the Most Important Asset for Entrepreneurs

Your health isn't separate from your success. George frames it plainly: your health is one of your greatest business and success assets, and your energy might be your single biggest competitive advantage. You don't experience your business separately from your health and mental state — you bring your energy into every meeting, every conversation, every negotiation, every problem you have to solve. That's why taking care of yourself isn't selfish, and it's definitely not something to postpone until you have more time. It's part of becoming the person capable of creating the life you actually want to live.

Your health shouldn't be the price of your ambition. Your health should be part of your strategy that allows you to pursue your ambition.

Burnout Is Not a Badge of Honor

Entrepreneurship has built an entire culture around the grind — the hustle, the late nights, the early mornings, the sacrifices. And we wear the exhaustion like a trophy. George admits he did exactly that for years. But burnout isn't a badge of honor, and exhaustion isn't proof of commitment.

Think about what actually happens when you're running on empty. Your patience gets shorter. Your decision-making gets worse. Your creativity drops. Even your discipline suffers. And it doesn't stay contained in your calendar — it bleeds into your relationships, your leadership, and the way your team experiences you. You can't build an extraordinary business on an exhausted foundation.

The Four Pillars of Sustainable Energy

We overcomplicate this. When it comes to sustainable energy, there are really four areas to manage: sleep, nutrition, exercise, and recovery. Get intentional about those four and most of the noise takes care of itself.

Sleep and Nutrition: The Fuel You Actually Run On

Entrepreneurs love to treat sleep like wasted time. Cut sleep, get more hours, get more done. But George draws an important distinction: there's a difference between having more hours and having more *productive* hours. Sleep is when your body and brain recover, reset, and prepare for performance. You can borrow against it temporarily — everyone has — but if you consistently borrow and never repay, you'll pay the price somewhere else.

Nutrition is the same idea. This isn't about chasing a perfect diet. It's about recognizing that food is your fuel. We spend enormous energy analyzing the resources in our business — money, employees, technology, marketing — but how much attention are you paying to the fuel your body runs on? Your nutrition drives your energy, your focus, your recovery, and your brain health. You don't have to be perfect. You do have to be intentional.

Exercise and Recovery: Capacity, Not Just Output

Exercise isn't about looking better. It's about performing — strength, cardiovascular health, mobility, movement. And there's a second payoff George has learned over the years: physical discipline builds your mental game. When you train yourself to do hard things consistently in the gym, you develop a confidence that carries into every other area of your life.

Recovery is the pillar entrepreneurs overlook the most, because we've mislabeled it as a reward. It isn't. Recovery isn't something you earn after you hit a goal — it's a built-in component of high performance. Elite athletes don't train at maximum intensity every waking hour; when they do, they break down. Recovery is what allows the body to grow and adapt. Business is no different. You need periods of intense focus, and you also need moments to disconnect, reset, think, sit in silence, or be with people you care about.

Peak Performance Isn't Maximum Output

This is the reframe that changes everything. Peak performance isn't maximum output — it's the ability to perform at a high level *consistently*. Picture an athlete with an amazing game, then a terrible one, then an amazing one, then a terrible one. Nobody calls that elite. The goal isn't maximum output every day. The goal is sustained performance over time.

Anyone can force an extreme week: overhaul the diet, double the workouts, cut sleep, work eighteen-hour days. The wrong question is *what can I force myself to do for the next 30 days?* The better question is *what can I consistently maintain for the next 10 years?* Your life, your business, and your health are all built the same way — through small habits that compound.

Don't become so successful building your life that you lose the ability to live it.

How to Find Your Energy Leak

Here's where entrepreneurs get trapped: I'll focus on my health later. I'll work out when the project is done. I'll eat better when things calm down. I'll sleep after the launch. I'll take time off when I hit the goal. But you already know what happens — the finish line keeps moving. There's always another project, another opportunity, another problem. And if you're not careful, your health becomes the price you pay for your ambition.

So don't overhaul everything this weekend. Just find the one leak. Ask yourself: what's draining my energy right now that I already know needs to change? Maybe you're not sleeping enough. Maybe your nutrition slipped. Maybe you stopped exercising — or maybe you're training too much and never recovering. Maybe it's stress, or a schedule that's simply out of control.

Action Steps

  • Identify your single biggest energy leak right now: sleep, nutrition, exercise, overtraining, stress, or an overloaded schedule.
  • Make one adjustment you can maintain long term — not a three-day sprint you'll abandon by Wednesday.
  • Audit your fuel the way you audit your business resources: ask whether what you're eating supports your focus and recovery.
  • Schedule recovery on purpose instead of waiting to earn it, and treat it as part of your performance plan.
  • Replace the question "what can I force for 30 days?" with "what can I sustain for 10 years?"

Habits create consistency, consistency creates energy, and energy gives you the capacity to lead, think, create, build, and actually enjoy what you're building. Wealth without wellness is a limited life with limited freedom. Protect your energy, build it, invest it — and remember, it's never too late to start living the life you were meant to live.

[00:00:00] food is your fuel. And we spend all kinds of time analyzing the resources [00:00:05] we use in our business, like the money and employees and technology and marketing, but how much attention [00:00:10] are you paying to the fuel that you're using your body to live your life and create your life? Your [00:00:15] nutrition is gonna affect your energy, your focus, your recovery, your brain health So [00:00:20] you don't have to be perfect, but you have to be intentional with it. [00:00:25] [00:00:30] What's going on, guys? George Wright III with your [00:00:35] daily dose of inspiration, motivation, and education. Welcome back to "The Daily Mastermind." Today I [00:00:40] wanna talk to you about something, um, that I've been wanting to do an episode on for a while. It's your energy. 'Cause I [00:00:45] think energy is an asset that makes everything else possible, and you know what it's like when you [00:00:50] have low energy. So we're gonna talk today about how you can maximize that. So, um, thanks for [00:00:55] joining me. I really appreciate you being here this week. I hope you really enjoyed that episode with Blake Erickson yesterday from [00:01:00] Scaling.com. We got some great stuff we're gonna be doing with those guys, and especially with the events [00:01:05] and stuff we have coming up. If you haven't already, head over to The Daily Mastermind, opt [00:01:10] into the Prosperity Report newsletter. You're gonna see some things come out in that newsletter that are only gonna come [00:01:15] out in the Prosperity Report. This is links to resources and assets, even [00:01:20] special invitations to private events. So don't miss out on that. Go over there and just opt in. I'll- I [00:01:25] think I don't even ask for your name, just your email address so we can keep you on the list, and we'll keep you [00:01:30] up to date with what's going on. There's some exciting things. So for the episode today, [00:01:35] I want you to think about this, because as entrepreneurs, we spend an incredible amount of [00:01:40] time protecting all of our assets, right? Our money and business, investments, uh, [00:01:45] opportunities and relationships. But there's one asset that makes every other asset possible, [00:01:50] and it's the one we probably take for granted more than anything else, and [00:01:55] it's our energy. Think about that for a minute. Our energy is [00:02:00] something that is probably our greatest asset. Because it doesn't matter how great your strategy is [00:02:05] if you don't have the energy to execute it. You know, think about it. Your [00:02:10] energy is what's going to help you to deal with your strategy. It doesn't matter how many opportunities you [00:02:15] have if you're too tired, and it doesn't matter how, you know, successful you become if your [00:02:20] health and your energy and everything is low. And that's why I want you to think differently about your health [00:02:25] today. Today, we're gonna talk a little bit about- your health because it's creating a [00:02:30] lifestyle that, you know, you can, you can really cherish and, and creating the legacy that you want. [00:02:35] Because your health, you know, it isn't separate [00:02:40] from your success. Your health is one of your greatest business and success assets, and so your energy might be one of your [00:02:45] greatest competitive advantages if you think about it from that perspective. Unfortunately, [00:02:50] entrepreneurship has created a culture where we really, you know, sort of [00:02:55] build up the grind, right? The, the exhaustion. We talk about the grind, the hustle, the late [00:03:00] nights, the early mornings, the sacrifices, and we almost wear it as a badge of honor. [00:03:05] I did for many, many years. Um, but burnout isn't a badge of honor, and exhaustion [00:03:10] isn't proof that you're committed. Eventually, exhaustion's just gonna make you less effective. Think about what [00:03:15] happens when you're running on empty. Your patience is shorter, your decision-making's worse, your [00:03:20] creativity drops, your discipline even suffers. Like, I personally am not as [00:03:25] effective when I'm low on energy or I'm burned out. So, and it, by the way, it, it moves way over [00:03:30] into your relationships and your leadership and your, you know, your business. So You know, you [00:03:35] don't experience your business separately from your health and mental state, and you, you will bring your [00:03:40] energy into everything you do. So it's important that you bring the right energy to every meeting, [00:03:45] you know, every conversation, negotiation, problem, and that's why taking care [00:03:50] of yourself isn't selfish. It's definitely not something you should put off until you have more time. It's [00:03:55] part of becoming the person capable of creating the life that you wanna live. [00:04:00] So let, let's simplify this for you, okay? 'Cause I think a lot of times we way [00:04:05] overcomplicate it. When I think about sustainable energy, there are basically four areas. There's [00:04:10] sleep, there's nutrition, there's exercise, and there's recovery. And don't forget [00:04:15] recovery. Let's start with sleep. A lot of people, a lot of people, [00:04:20] like entrepreneurs, treat sleep like it's a waste of time. As I've gotten older you see [00:04:25] me with this, this WHOOP now, if you're on YouTube I'm tracking things, and I've l- really learned [00:04:30] that sleep... You know, because if, if we sleep less in business, let me put [00:04:35] it this way, as I've kinda gone through business, I feel like I got more hours to do things. But there's a difference between having [00:04:40] more hours and having more productive hours. Sleep is when your body and your brain are recovering. It's when you [00:04:45] reset. It's when you prepare yourself for performance. And you might be able to [00:04:50] sacrifice sleep temporarily, 'cause we've all done it, but if you consistently borrow your sleep and [00:04:55] waste it, like you, you don't use it, eventually you're gonna pay the price in some [00:05:00] other area. But next to sleep is probably nutrition. And I'm not gonna talk [00:05:05] about chasing the perfect diet or, you know, something like that. I just want you to [00:05:10] recognize that food is your fuel. And we spend all kinds of time [00:05:15] analyzing the resources we use in our business, like the money and employees and technology and marketing, but [00:05:20] how much attention are you paying to the fuel that you're using your body to live your life and [00:05:25] create your life? Your nutrition is gonna affect your energy, your focus, your recovery, your brain health [00:05:30] So you don't have to be perfect, but you have to be intentional with it. Okay? And then [00:05:35] we've got exercise. And think I've always been a big fan of working out, [00:05:40] but exercise isn't just about looking better. It's about performing, strength, [00:05:45] cardiovascular, mobility, movement. And there's something else I've learned over the years. Physical [00:05:50] discipline has a way of basically building your mental game because when you train [00:05:55] yourself to consistently do things physically, you develop confidence that carries into every area of your life.[00:06:00] So the workouts are a very key factor. And then the last one is recovery. Now, this [00:06:05] may be an area that entrepreneurs overlook the most because we think of recovery as something that you don't [00:06:10] get. You know? We earn it after we've had, you know, enough hard work and [00:06:15] reward. But recovery isn't a reward for performance. Recovery is not something you [00:06:20] get when you hit a goal. Recovery is part of a high-performance elite [00:06:25] athlete entrepreneur, anybody that wants to perform at a high level. Think about athletes. [00:06:30] They don't train at maximum intensity every waking [00:06:35] hour. When they do, they burn out, right? Because recovery is worked in so that it allows the [00:06:40] body to grow and adapt. And business isn't any different. You need [00:06:45] periods of intense focus, for sure, and you have to elevate your level of performance. [00:06:50] But you also need moments when you disconnect, you reset, you think, you spend time [00:06:55] with people that you care about, right? Or in silence, and give yourself and your mind and body a chance [00:07:00] to recover. Because the goal isn't maximum output every day. The goal is [00:07:05] sustained performance over time. And that's an important distinction because peak performance [00:07:10] isn't maximum output. Think about that for a minute. Peak performance is your [00:07:15] ability to perform at a high level consistently. Imagine a, a peak [00:07:20] athlete having an amazing game and then a horrible game, and an amazing game and then a horrible game. It's [00:07:25] not about that. It's about having high levels consistently, and that's what sustained [00:07:30] energy that's what's needed is sustained energy. You know, anybody can go for an extreme week [00:07:35] and it's like kill it in the gym, kill it in business, but you can't, you know, [00:07:40] change things if it's not consistent. So you can completely change your diet, double [00:07:45] your workouts, cut out sleep, work 18 hours, and force yourself through it and do a lot. But the [00:07:50] question isn't what can I force myself to do for the next 30 days? The better question is, what can I [00:07:55] consistently maintain for the next 10 years? Because your life is built through consistency.[00:08:00] Your business is built through consistency just as well. And your health [00:08:05] even is built through consistency. Small habits that compound over time to create [00:08:10] massive results. And here's where entrepreneurs get trapped, at least in my opinion [00:08:15] We keep telling ourselves we'll focus on our health later, or I'll start working [00:08:20] out when the project is done, or I'll start eating better when things calm down, or I'll sleep better after this big [00:08:25] launch I'm doing. I'll take time off when I hit my big goal. But you already know what [00:08:30] happens. The finish line keeps moving. The goalposts keep moving. There's always [00:08:35] another project or opportunity or problem to solve. And if you're not careful, your health [00:08:40] becomes the price that you actually pay for your ambition. I don't think that's the way it should work. [00:08:45] Your health shouldn't be the price of your ambition. Your health should be part of your strategy that allows you to [00:08:50] pursue your ambition and then be even more fulfilled when you're getting there. [00:08:55] Because why are you building all this in the first place? That's the question I want you to think about. Why am I [00:09:00] building this life? You're probably not building a business simply because you want a bigger [00:09:05] business. You're building it because you believe the business can create your freedom and experiences and [00:09:10] impact and contribution, but you can't do that without your health. [00:09:15] Time with people that you care about is important, but you can't do that and enjoy your life without your health. [00:09:20] You know, success loses a lot of its value if you don't have the health and energy to [00:09:25] actually experience it So I want you to think about that. [00:09:30] Really, really think about it. Wealth without wellness creates a [00:09:35] limited life, and very limited freedom, by the way. You don't have, you know, you don't have the [00:09:40] freedom that you're really trying to, to fight for your whole life. Don't become so successful building your life that you [00:09:45] lose the ability to live it. So here's what I want you to do, you know, especially as we go into the [00:09:50] weekend here. Don't try to overhaul everything. You know, I know what you're gonna do. You're gonna go out there this [00:09:55] weekend and try to, like, get right back on the wagon with everything. Instead, just identify [00:10:00] one area where maybe there's an energy leak. Ask yourself, [00:10:05] "What's draining my energy right now that I already know needs to change?" Maybe, [00:10:10] for example, it's you're not sleeping enough. Maybe your nutrition is not great or you've [00:10:15] stopped exercising. Maybe you're actually training too much and you're just not recovering. But [00:10:20] whatever it is, or maybe, actually, maybe it's just stress that's consuming you or your schedule is out of control. [00:10:25] Sometimes I have my schedule so overwhelming I just gotta cut it back. Whatever it is, identify it, [00:10:30] that one energy leak, and then make a, make an [00:10:35] adjustment. Not something, you know, that you'll do for three days, something [00:10:40] that you actually will maintain, something you can change long term. Maybe it's, [00:10:45] you know, one decision to set your schedule in a different direction. Because [00:10:50] habits will create consistency, and consistency creates energy, [00:10:55] and your energy will give you more capacity to lead, to think, to create, to [00:11:00] build, to basically enjoy your life. So protect your energy, [00:11:05] build your energy, invest your energy. Burnout is not a badge of honor. [00:11:10] Energy is your competitive advantage. And remember this: you can't build an [00:11:15] extraordinary business on an exhausted foundation. [00:11:20] So this is why I'm highlighting today energy. I think it's so important for us. I hope you'll [00:11:25] take this to heart as you go throughout the weekend, because if you, and I believe you [00:11:30] are, if you're really, truly creating something great and I [00:11:35] believe it's never too late to start creating the life you're meant to live. But I want you to [00:11:40] consider energy as a key component to do that. And if you do that, I think you'll [00:11:45] see some major changes. I hope this episode has kinda given you some ideas and thoughts. I'd [00:11:50] like to hear from you. Hit me up on Daily Mastermind. Go to the website, dailymastermind.com, make a [00:11:55] comment. Hit me up, let me know what you're working on or what you're struggling with. I'd love to get your feedback. We're gonna be [00:12:00] going into a nice towards-the-end-of-the-year push, and I'd love to know what type of [00:12:05] topics you wanna hear. So we'll bring in some good additional leaders and experts, but I wanna hear from [00:12:10] you personally. So hit me up. I look forward to talking with you soon.
