You Are Not Your Past: Rewrite Your Story and Own Your Future

Listen

George Wright III opened this episode of The Daily Mastermind with a thought he couldn't shake after a morning gym session: most people are living trapped inside an old version of themselves. If you want to build an abundant mindset and an extraordinary life, the first step is changing the way you see yourself.

The episode centers on two interlocked principles. First, you are not your past. Second, and equally powerful: you are your future. Together they form a framework for breaking free from the limiting beliefs that quietly erode your confidence and block the growth you are working so hard to achieve.

Why Your Self-Image Is the Starting Point

Before you can change your habits, your income, your relationships, or your health, you have to change the story you tell yourself. George points to a pattern he sees constantly: people apply harsher filters to themselves than anyone else would. Low self-image, distorted self-perception, and unconscious limiting beliefs all work together to keep you anchored to a past version of yourself that no longer exists.

He notes that Tony Robbins and many other thought leaders have addressed this, but the insight bears repeating because so many people still default to self-talk like "I'm bad at relationships," "that's just the way I am," or "why do things like that always happen to me?" Those phrases are not neutral descriptions; they are instructions you are feeding your subconscious.

The Limiting Beliefs You May Not Even Notice

Some of the most damaging beliefs never get spoken out loud. George's argument is that if you don't have unshakable confidence, you almost certainly carry some thoughts or feelings about yourself that are less positive and abundant than they could be. That is not a criticism; it is a near-universal human condition.

The reason I can say this about everyone, whether I know them or not, is that you're here. You're alive on this earth and living, breathing. Do you realize how incredibly rare and unique and special that is?

Every person listening has already overcome massive obstacles. You learned to walk, to talk, to navigate relationships, to hold down a job, to recover from failures that felt unsurvivable at the time. The problem is not a lack of wins; it is that most people focus on how many times they fell rather than how many times they got back up.

You Are Not Your Past Self

George is direct on this point: you are not the second-grader struggling to write your name, not the person who stumbled through an early relationship, not the employee who made costly mistakes on the first job. You are literally not that person anymore, at any level.

Stop comparing, filtering, and judging your life based on that person, because you're not that person anymore.

Holding yourself to the standard of your worst or youngest moments is not humility; it is inaccuracy. It is also a ceiling on everything you are trying to build.

You Are Your Future

The flip side of releasing the past is actively inhabiting the future version of yourself. George calls this visualizing and accepting the best version of you before you have fully become that person. Abundance, by definition, is expecting something you do not yet have. It requires faith that growth is coming, which is easy to have once you recognize that growth has been happening your entire life without interruption.

When you start filtering your decisions and self-talk through the lens of the person you are becoming rather than the person you used to be, several things shift. Your goals get clearer. You become more patient with yourself. You stop holding yourself to an old standard and start holding yourself to a better one. Distractions lose their grip because you have something more compelling to move toward.

How Visualization Builds Unshakable Confidence

The act of consistently seeing your best future self in your mind is not wishful thinking; it is a training mechanism for your subconscious. George notes that the subconscious mind does not reliably distinguish between what you are saying and believing versus what is objectively true. Repetition shapes it. That is why daily rituals, affirmations, and "I am" statements are practical tools, not feel-good extras.

Specific statements matter here. Not "I want to be wealthy" but "I am wealthy." Not "I'm working on communication" but "I am a great communicator." The future version of you is the version to identify with starting now.

Action Steps

  • Catch yourself when you use language like "I never," "I always," or "that's just the way I am," and consciously replace those phrases with an abundant alternative.
  • Build or strengthen a daily ritual that includes affirmations and "I am" statements. Repeat them consistently; repetition is the mechanism that makes them work.
  • Practice visualizing the future version of yourself in specific, vivid terms. Picture how that person handles challenges, speaks to others, and spends their time.
  • When you face a setback, reframe it: ask how many times you have already gotten back up, not how many times you have fallen.
  • Give yourself credit for what you have already overcome. You are not a beginner at life; you have been winning for years without keeping score.

There has never been a better time to stop living by the rules of a person you no longer are. The future version of you is already in motion; it's never too late to start living the life you were meant to live.

Hey, welcome back everybody. I want to talk to you today about the fact that you are not your past, but you are your future. Welcome back to The Daily Mastermind. My name is George Wright III, and for those of you that are first time joining us, I'm here every day with your daily dose of inspiration, motivation, and education. I send this podcast out generally in the mornings about 6 a.m. mountain time. Other than when I'm traveling, obviously running businesses, so I've got to do that as well. But I'm going to start you out today with the quote of the day. The quote of the day is, compassion is the basis of morality by Arnold Schopenhauer. I got to tell you, the world could use a lot more compassion and concern for others right now. You know, ironically, this is probably the best strategy you could actually have to create the best version of yourself as well and eliminate negativity and scarcity thinking. You know, I've always found that when I stop thinking about my own misfortune or problems and focus on service and compassion for others, my life always changes in amazing ways. So I'd encourage you to think of that. And hang on just a second. Alexa, pause. I always have, you know, my Alexa in the background. So I want to make sure you guys can hear me really clearly. Because I had a thought today I wanted to share with you. I don't have any really notes. I just thought of this when I was working out at the gym and I thought it was really important to bring up. Today I want to talk to you about learning to change the perspective that you have on yourself. I mean, let's face it, if you can't change the way you see yourself, then you're never going to shift into an optimal state of abundant thinking, right? I'm referring to the stories we all tell ourselves about who we are, how we act, you know, most importantly, you know, how we see ourselves in the mirror when it's just you. you know tony robbins and many other thought leaders have talked about changing your limiting beliefs and the self-image that you have the story you tell yourself in order to restore confidence motivation and passion in your life but it always starts with changing the view you have of yourself because people will see you how you see yourself and i you know i've personally found many people are suffering lately from this either low self-image which is a different form of confidence or a distorted version of who they really think that they are. You sometimes have more harsh filters on yourself than other people even do, and it's hard for you to see that. And I can't emphasize enough how much this tends to limit and block the growth that I know that you're desperately trying to achieve in your life. And in order to start having more abundant mindset, you've got to start with how you see yourself and this filter or this perspective that you apply to your life because it affects all of your actions. Now you've heard me say, actually you've heard probably this many different places and it bears mentioning right now that you are not your past. Your past or the past version of yourself does not define you And I truly believe that most of us would agree with this statement I think we all know this but why do we continue to define ourselves with limiting beliefs about ourselves that erode the value and self-worth that we really deserve and that we really should have? I mean, let me give you some examples. You know, have you ever caught yourself saying, I never, or I always, or that's just the way I am, or, you know, I'm bad at relationships, or I'm not great at doing that, or that's always happening to me or I wish I could just catch a break or why do things like that happen or I wish I could do this or I wish I could do that. I could go on and on and on, but I want you to consider that sometimes we even feel or believe certain things about ourselves that limit us and they're just even subconscious and maybe you don't outwardly express them because the bottom line is if you don't have unshakable confidence, and you know I struggle with this everybody struggles with this to a degree then it's likely you have some thoughts or feelings or limiting beliefs that are just not you know as positive or healthy or abundant about yourself as they could be and the reason I can say this is because I know even without knowing some of you personally that every single person reading or listening to this message has huge potential you have unlimited you know potential inside you because you've already overcome massive obstacles and challenges and trials in your life. I know every single one of you have. You know, the fact is, the reason I can say this about everyone, whether I know them or not, is that you're here. You're alive on this earth and living, breathing, you know, a living, breathing person. And so do you realize how incredibly rare and unique and special that is? Also, you've had to overcome a million challenges growing up. I mean, think about it for a second. And I know it doesn't sound very significant, but you had to learn to walk. You had to learn to talk or act or survive. And there was very little anyone else can do to literally make your mind and body do these things. You had to do it on your own. And of course, we had people in our lives that will help us when we struggle or when we fell or pick us up when we stumble. But you have to recognize that. You have to recognize that all throughout your life. you know I don't you've overcome and adapted and triumphed and won in so many different ways and the real problem is that most of us don't even see that we are winners in life or triumphant even if we feel like we're successful I know some of the most successful people in life that still didn't feel like they were satisfied with who they were or what they were and we just need to recognize and point out our failures and how many times we've overcome them instead of just trying to point out our failures and how many times we fell down. So it's kind of like Rocky said in that movie that you all know, you know, it's not how many times we fall down in life that counts. It's how many times we pick ourselves up and keep going on that make a difference. This is, it's not just a cool story. It's a universal truth. It's a principle. It's a success clue so remember that you are not your past I mean you know literally you not a one baby trying to learn to walk right You not that person You not the second grade or third grader learning to write your name or learn a language You're not the person that got that first job and learned a skill, the person that learned to ride a bike or drive a car. You're not the person that, you know, went blindly into, you know, a relationship not knowing what to do and learned from all your mistakes or whatever it is as you progress in your relationship or you've moved to different relationships. You're not your past. And you're not even the past version of yourself that you think you are. You're not. So stop comparing, filtering, and judging your life based on that person because you're not that person anymore. You know, however, you are the future, improved, better version of yourself that you desire. So even though you're not your past because you're literally not physically your past, you are your future. And let me tell you what I mean by that. You see, the second principle that I want to emphasize to you is that you must learn to visualize, accept, and challenge yourself to become the best version that there can be. Because a key principle is to learn that you have to start to filter and visualize being in the now, the future version of yourself in order to truly create that person and get outside your comfort zone and grow and succeed and have fulfillment. And most importantly, to become abundant thinkers. Because abundance is expecting something that you don't already have. It's having faith that you're going to have something in your life. And that version of you is the place to start. The reason you can be abundant is that you've already proven that you're evolving and growing and becoming better. You know this from experience. It's a fact, right? It's been happening your entire life. So let's start to get ahead of the curve and just accept that principle that you are going to grow and create the version of yourself that you already know you're going to become. Are you getting what I'm trying to say here? It's so important. You know, I want to suggest that you stop viewing the past version of yourself. Just stop. You know, you've learned the lessons. You've gotten that going forward. And the bottom line is, if you haven't learned the lessons, don't analyze it. Because when you get in a situation again, then you can go back and reflect on how to do it better. Start visualizing and believing the future version of yourself. And miracles are going to start to happen in your life. You know, this act of visualizing your best version of you, it'll provide so many benefits to you. At a minimum, you're going to become more inspired to live that version, or you'll become more motivated to do the work it takes to get there, or your vision and your goals will become more clear and vivid. You'll have clarity in your life. You'll be able to handle situations in a more abundant way rather than a negative way. You won't hold yourself to an old standard, but you'll hold yourself to a new standard, a better standard. You'll eliminate all the distractions, the negativity, the destructive thought patterns, because you're going to let go of the past and look to the future. not only that, but you'll be able to be more patient with yourself and your learning. You recognize that growth and small wins are there and you don have to worry about the losses and failures because you becoming better And most importantly you going to build this unshakable confidence and a much higher self-esteem when you do this. Now, I know that this whole thought isn't easy. If it were easy, it wouldn't be hard. Did you catch that? Listen to that statement again. If it were easy, it wouldn't be hard. And don't we want growth in our lives? Don't we want things to be hard? because if they were easy, we're not going to grow. So absolutely, we want things to challenge us and to make us better and to be difficult. And so here's what I recommend you do. I recommend you double down on your daily rituals. I recommend you implement affirmations and I am statements. I am this person. I am successful. I am wealthy. I am great at communication. I am a great father, a great husband, a great communicator, whatever it is. And start telling yourself daily that you are the best version of yourself so that inside, because repetition is the key and the subconscious mind doesn't know the difference between what you're saying and you're believing and what is true. And I know that's one way that you can start creating the life that you were truly meant to live. I really challenge you to start recognizing and treating yourself like the best version of yourself. And that's my message. That's what I wanted to share with you. So I hope you have an amazing day. I appreciate you listening.
