Stoic 3-Step Process for Overcoming Obstacles in Your Life

Listen

Every one of us is dealing with some kind of obstacle right now. It might be a business challenge, a lost job, a relationship falling apart, a health concern, or a long-standing mental block that keeps you from moving forward. In a solo episode of The Daily Mastermind, host George Wright III draws on Ryan Holiday's book *The Obstacle Is the Way* and the timeless wisdom of Marcus Aurelius to lay out a clear, actionable three-step framework for turning your biggest obstacles into your greatest fuel.

The framework is built on three principles that Holiday identifies and that Marcus Aurelius practiced: perception, action, and will. George breaks each one down and shows you how to apply it in your own life, regardless of what you're facing right now.

Why Most People Stay Stuck at Their Obstacles

Most of the obstacles that stop people are not external problems. They are internal ones. Years of learned perceptions, fears, frustrations, and mental programming create a wall that seems impossible to scale. You may know exactly what you need to do, yet still find yourself paralyzed.

George points out that some people push through these exact same kinds of challenges while others remain stuck for months or even years. The difference is not talent or luck. It is the process they use to engage with the obstacle itself. As George explains, the obstacle is not the thing standing between you and success; it is the path to success.

How Perception Shapes the Way You Face Challenges

The first step in the stoic framework is perception: how you interpret and see your problem. Marcus Aurelius described it this way:

Objective judgment now at this very moment, unselfish action now at this very moment, willing acceptance now at this very moment of all external events.

Perception is not about pretending your problem does not exist. It is about stripping away emotional reactivity and seeing the situation clearly. George encourages you to recognize your own power in the moment, process your feelings and emotions honestly, and then return your focus to the present. When you can see a problem without the distortion of panic or resentment, you can begin to find the opportunity embedded inside it.

How Action Converts Obstacles into Forward Progress

Once your perception is grounded, the second step is action. This is where you bring energy, creativity, and persistence to bear. George emphasizes that forward momentum is non-negotiable. You cannot think your way out of an obstacle; you have to move through it.

His guidance on action centers on three ideas: keep moving forward continuously, stay persistent even when results are slow, and channel your energy deliberately toward the direction you have chosen. As George notes, Brendan Burchard also speaks to the importance of channeling energy as a critical factor in high performance. Action without direction drains you; directed action compounds.

The Role of Will in Sustaining Your Effort

Perception and action can get you started, but the third step, will, is what keeps you going when the process gets hard. Will is your inner reserve: the discipline you build, the peace of mind you cultivate, and the external motivations you tap into when your internal drive runs low.

George describes will as the commitment to a philosophy of life, not just a one-time effort. Stoicism teaches that you cannot control everything that happens to you, but you can always control your response. Practicing self-discipline, finding genuine peace of mind, and connecting to a purpose larger than yourself are what sustain the journey through any obstacle.

What History's Greatest Leaders Have in Common

George points to a long list of people who overcame massive obstacles to become extraordinary: Abraham Lincoln, John Rockefeller, Margaret Thatcher, Amelia Earhart, Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan. Each of them faced challenges that could have ended their stories early. Instead, they found a way to use those challenges as leverage.

Like oxygen to fire, their obstacles become the fuel to their internal fires that they're burning.

All of them learned to flip the obstacle, to see it not as a dead end but as the raw material for something greater. George's point is that these are not superhuman figures with rare gifts. They are people who chose a process and applied it consistently. Becoming great, as he says, is not a mystery. It is a path that any of us can choose.

Action Steps

  • Identify the obstacle in your life right now and ask honestly whether it is external or internal.
  • Work on your perception: recognize your own power, process your emotions, and bring your focus to the present moment.
  • Take one deliberate action today that moves you forward, however small; forward momentum is what breaks paralysis.
  • Build your will by establishing a daily discipline, such as journaling, exercise, or reflection, that strengthens your inner resolve.
  • Consider reading or listening to Ryan Holiday's *The Obstacle Is the Way* for the full depth of stories and strategies behind this framework.

Obstacles are not signs that you are on the wrong path. They are the path. When you apply perception, action, and will, you stop being blocked by your challenges and start being built by them. It is never too late to start living the life you were meant to live.

I'm telling you, I'm really excited to be with you every day and I hope you're being consistent with your daily rituals, but I'm also hoping that you're consistent listening. I want to be able to provide you with information, education that you need on a weekly basis in business and personal and financial and even authors and celebrities, experts and people that I think thought leaders that can help you as we start to release these interviews upcoming. But today, I want to share with you a pretty important principle that I feel will set you up for success over the coming weeks. And it's that principle, it's a principle of perspective, action and determination. Perspective, action and determination. Now, I recently reread, I know many of you know that I'm a big fan of Ryan Holiday's books, and I reread a big section out of The Obstacle is the Way. And I want to pick some key concepts out of that, and I really highly recommend you grab a copy. You know, Ryan's a multiple-time New York best-selling author, and he's someone that has a very unique perspective on life and business based on these ideas of stoicism, which I know you've heard of if you've done anything with Tim Ferriss or if you're an entrepreneur nowadays, which most of you are. So let me walk you through some principles, thoughts, and strategies that you can use to sort of change your perspective in your life in a really big way. And they all basically relate back to this idea of perspective, action, and determination. You see, we're all facing obstacles in our life right now. And it might be a business challenge or a loss of a job. It might be relationship issues affecting your life. It might even be health concerns or communication problems. It might even be a challenge that's with someone close to us or someone that we love and really care about, but it's affecting our lives and challenging our mindset on a daily basis. But whatever the challenges that you face, because we all face them, especially if you're a producer and a high achiever, usually these are things that impact us in our daily lives, but they're things that are in our mind. They're things that get us stuck inside our head or paralyzed to move forward in various areas. And this book, this whole idea is of stoicism and the thoughts of Marcus Aurelius. They're talking about a blueprint, a solution, so to speak, for how we can not only overcome obstacles, making that obstacle is the way, as the title says, but to turn these obstacles into massive fuel for growth. Let me explain to you what I mean. What if embedded inside the problems that we facing or inherent in those problems were benefits Benefits that only you could benefit from What would you do if you knew that? I mean, let's be honest, probably nothing causes most of us, you know, the same stress. And so they're always unique. But we're paralyzed or stuck when it comes to massive obstacles in our lives. And the reason for this is that stuff that blocks us is blocking us for a reason. That fear, that frustration, depression, anger, years and years of programming that we've had inside our heads and everyone's unique, everyone's had a different life experience. It's stuff that we can't, we sort of know what to do, but we simply cannot act, right? Like, why is it that we're not doing what we need to do and we're struggling with things that are unique to us? So why is it that people can push through their problems? You know, some people can and some people can't. Why do most of us get stuck and can't seem to get past certain challenges while other people breeze through them? And maybe certain challenges have plagued you for weeks and weeks or months and months throughout your life. You know, there are men and women in life that have become famous because they've overcome their particular challenges and went on to become amazing leaders because they used their challenge to propel themselves to amazing heights. They learned how to overcome their specific things. And that's what we need to do. I mean, people like Abraham Lincoln, John Rockefeller, Margaret Thatcher, Amelia Earhart, Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan. I could go on and on and on. Why and how did these people overcome massive obstacles in their life to become great? And trust me, they've all had massive obstacles and stories in their life. I mean, they really have. Well, bottom line, all great leaders and successful people find a way to turn their weakness into strength and find weaknesses in their area, in their life, whatever, into strengths. Like oxygen to fire, their obstacles become the fuel to their internal fires that they're burning. All of these people I mentioned learn to flip their obstacles upside down and turn them into fuel. And the crazy thing is, the process is actually pretty simple. But, you know, as Ryan Holiday puts it, it's never easy. We know that. It's not about just changing the way you look at things. It involves thoughts, actions, and commitment to a purpose, a philosophy in your life. That's the whole idea behind stoicism, right? That's what stoicism is all about. The most important thing to remember from the start is that most problems that are keeping us stuck are internal, not external problems in our lives. Most things that happen to us are things that we wrestle with in our mind. And because of our certain learned perception to obstacles and problems that we face that what creates the problem The key to overcoming the obstacle that you dealing with it lies in this message that the book talks about with Marcus Aurelius And let me just read you something that Marcus Aurelius said. He said, objective judgment now at this very moment, unselfish action now at this very moment, willing acceptance now at this very moment of all external events. that's all you need those three things now i don't have time to get into all the research examples and stories and trust me there is a ton of proof but holiday says overcoming obstacles is a discipline of three critical elements your perception your action and your will your perception your action and your will all three of these steps are important to really and truly turn on and and and make these obstacles in your life benefits or fuels to your life you need to start by analyzing, number one, how you look at a problem. That's your perception. Then you need to work on the energy, creativity, and approach that you use to break the problem down and turn it into opportunities through your actions. That's number two, your actions. And then finally, you need to cultivate and maintain an inner will that helps you to handle any defeat and stay consistent. Those are the three things that he's talking about. And I encourage you to read the or download the audio book, which I like to listen to when I'm doing cardio, which is not very often, but I do do cardio. But he really breaks these three areas down and helps you to understand, break them apart, develop strategies in each of these three areas. But just to give you kind of a high level, with your perception, you need to understand and recognize your power. Deal with all of your feelings and emotions and learn to focus on the present moment. With your perception, recognize your power, deal with your feelings and emotions, and learn to focus on the present moment. Now, with your responses or your actions, you'll need to understand and focus on moving forward continuously. Your forward progress is key. But you also have to be persistent, and you have to channel your energy and seize the moment to choose your direction. Channeling your energy is a real big factor. Brendan Burchard talks a lot about that as well. And then finally, the third part of that is your will. This is the third part of this process. Besides your perception and your actions, your will. And your will, you're going to need to practice self-discipline. You're going to need to practice finding peace of mind. And you're going to need to practice finding motivation outside of yourself. Things that will drive you. That how you take this perception actions and will and put it into play But I promise you that as you learn about the hundreds of stories and examples of people if you read that book just like you and me that overcame challenges and obstacles in their life it literally will help your perception and perspective to change by hearing those stories So when you realize that you're not, it's because when you realize, you know, you're not the only one dealing with problems you face and that the heroes in most of the stories of life are not superhuman, they don't have some unique rare gift, that's when you'll start to learn the becoming great is just a process. It's just a path that each of us can choose to take if we just apply the time-tested proven principles and skills in our life. You know, perception, action, will. It's just a path. It's just a process. And ultimately, I feel like it's time that each of us does recognize that our perspective is going to be the key to changing our lives. And that, you know, there are specific and proven strategies to help you to do this. But, you know, finally, and probably most importantly, you're not alone. And you can change your life on a dime and start making changes and creating that life that you're meant to live. It's just a decision. You just need to start doing the heavy lifting and put the principles and environment in place to help you to do it. So let's be willing to do what it takes to accept the road as difficult. Just know that you were looking forward to the struggle. Let's learn to struggle intentionally, right? You know you're going to struggle, so accept it, but then struggle intentionally in order to create more happiness, fulfillment, and success in your life.
