Self-Confidence vs. Self-Doubt: How to Build an Unshakeable Inner Foundation

Listen

Self-confidence is not a personality trait you either have or lack. It is a skill, and like any skill, you can develop it with deliberate practice. On The Daily Mastermind, George Wright III delivers a sharp, practical breakdown of why so many high achievers still wrestle with self-doubt, what the real difference between the two is, and exactly what you can do to start tipping the scales in your favor.

This is an episode for anyone who has ever felt like an imposter, struggled to follow through on their own commitments, or wondered why external success still leaves a nagging sense of not being enough. George draws on his thirty years of business experience, as well as insights from mentors including Ed Mylett and Les Brown, to give you a roadmap for the inner game.

Why Self-Confidence and Self-Doubt Are Not the Same Thing

Most people lump self-confidence and self-doubt together as if they are two ends of a single dial. George separates them clearly: self-doubt is a belief about yourself rooted in past experience, while self-confidence is the operating skill you draw on when you take action and create new experiences.

This distinction matters. You can feel deeply confident in the moment while still carrying underlying doubt about whether you deserve the result. That gap is what produces imposter syndrome. Recognizing that these are two separate variables gives you two separate levers to work on.

How Your Beliefs Shape Your Actions (and Your Results)

Your mind filters every decision through your existing beliefs. If you believe you are not good enough, your actions will quietly begin to reflect that belief, generating experiences that validate your doubts in a self-reinforcing loop.

What the mind of man can conceive and believe, it can achieve.

George opens with this Napoleon Hill quote from *Think and Grow Rich* for good reason. Belief is not abstract philosophy; it is the engine of behavior. If your inner narrative says you will fail, your mind will find subtle ways to make that prediction come true. The work, then, is not simply to act more confidently outward. It is to change the inner story.

The Core Insight: Build Something Bigger Than Your Doubt

This is the pivot point of the episode. Many people try to fight self-doubt head-on, willing it to disappear. George offers a different frame:

You don't overcome self-doubt. You increase your self-confidence by building something bigger than your doubt.

The goal is not to eliminate doubt but to outgrow it. That is why high achievers seek bigger challenges rather than easier ones. Bigger challenges demand more confidence, force new action, and produce new wins that gradually expand your belief in what you are capable of. Success-oriented people want their potential to exceed their problems, not their problems to shrink to a manageable size.

Why Small Wins Are the Most Underrated Confidence Tool

You do not build lasting confidence by landing one massive victory. You build it by stacking small wins consistently over time. George references Alex Hormozi's framework of stacking wins: repeated small successes compound into a body of evidence that overrides the old narrative of doubt.

Practically, this means setting goals that are achievable in the near term and completing them, not just planning them. Each completed action adds a data point to your internal ledger. Over time, the ledger tips from "I rarely follow through" to "I do what I say I will do," and that shift is the foundation of genuine self-confidence.

How Breaking Small Promises Silently Destroys Confidence

Here is where George gets direct. The single fastest way to erode self-confidence has nothing to do with external failure. It happens in private, when you tell yourself you are going to do something and then do not do it.

Self-confidence is constantly being torn down when you break small promises to yourself.

Every skipped workout, every sales call you postponed, every commitment to your team you let slide is a quiet vote against yourself. Subconsciously, you are confirming that your word to yourself does not carry weight. George's principle is clean: how you do anything is how you do everything. Act in spite of your mood. Finish what you start. Keep the small promises, and the larger belief in yourself begins to solidify.

Why External Validation Is a Dead End

It is a common trap to assume that once you achieve enough, earn enough recognition, or receive enough approval, the confidence will follow. George is blunt: that is a myth. External validation does not build lasting self-confidence. It creates a dependency that leaves you vulnerable the moment circumstances change.

He uses the image of an iceberg: the visible structure above the water looks impressive, but 80 to 90 percent of the mass is below the surface, driven by deep underwater currents. Successful people who lose everything often had surface-level confidence driven by external markers. Those who sustain success have built the confidence from the inside out, independent of outcomes.

The battle is internal. Your inner world creates your outer results.

Action Steps

  • Separate the two variables: track your self-confidence (actions you take) and your self-doubt (beliefs about yourself) as distinct things to work on.
  • Stack small wins daily. Choose one or two commitments per day that you can realistically complete, and complete them without exception.
  • Keep every promise you make to yourself, especially the small ones. Treat self-integrity as the foundation of confidence.
  • Stop seeking external validation as a proxy for self-worth. Practice recognizing wins internally before waiting for outside confirmation.
  • Pursue bigger challenges deliberately. Stretch goals that push you past your comfort zone generate the new experiences that shrink old doubts over time.

Self-confidence is not something you wait to receive. It is something you build, one kept promise and one stacked win at a time. As George puts it, you have greatness inside you; the work is recognizing it and developing it like a muscle. It is never too late to start living the life you were meant to live.

So I encourage you to go check that out. So without any further ado, let me start with a quote. It's one of my favorite quotes by Napoleon Hill, what the mind of man can conceive and believe it can achieve. And, you know, this is, it's crazy because Think and Grow Rich, we talk about a lot because it's a book that's been around forever. Outside of the Bible, I think it's one of the most best-selling books of all time. So it's kind of crazy there. But I truly do believe that you can do anything that you put your mind to. And I think that you believe that as well, deep down. So what's the problem? What's holding you back? A lot of times in business, the problem is that we have all this self-doubt or low self-confidence at times. And it cycles, right? When we have successes, our confidence goes high. And when we're struggling, our doubt starts to creep in. But the bottom line is this can really paralyze us at times and keep us from our goals and our dreams. And you're asking yourself, like, am I good enough? Can I really do this? Is this something that I believe that I can accomplish? And if you're like most high achievers, you're constantly trying to operate outside your comfort zone. And so, of course, it's not stuff that you're really qualified to do in your life, in your business, whatever it is. Maybe you're experiencing new things in communication and relationships. But most of life is worth living outside your comfort zone. So what I recommend that you do is you don't overanalyze it, right? I've heard some great advice from one of my mentors, Ed Milet, the other day on his podcast, and I felt it was pretty appropriate and helpful. And so I'd like to kind of share some of these thoughts that I got from him as well as some of my own experiences in order to help you to really, you know, get past, grow your skill of confidence, but also get past this self-doubt and low confidence or low self-esteem you haven't. And there really is a difference. That's what I'm going to talk about. So the first thing that I would point out is there is a huge difference between self-doubt and low confidence. See, self-doubt is your belief about yourself based on your experience. Your self-confidence is what you operate from when you take action and in creating new experiences. So if you've got experiences that show that you're losing a lot, your self-doubt is going to creep in. You're going to have low confidence. You're going to have a lot of doubt in yourself. But your confidence is what you kind of pull in as a skill when you trying to operate and take action in your business Now the goal is to increase your confidence while lowering your self And I know a lot of times we don't think about it. I think the reason I've thought about this so much over the years is because there are times when those two different things are not in sync. Like you might exercise and act in a real confident way, but deep down have some self-doubt. It's like that imposter syndrome that we talk about at times. And so confidence is something you're going to build. The problem is that your mind views everything you do through your beliefs. This includes your self-doubt. This is why your thoughts and beliefs are so critical for you to work on. This is your inner game. If you believe you're not good enough or that you can't do something, that your actions are going to start to reflect that. Because if you believe you're not good enough and that you can't do something, your actions are going to reflect that, creating experiences that validate all your doubts and your low self-esteem. So you might find ways to validate what you believe. and and this is this is something that I really want you to think about because I tell people all the time if your actions don't align with what you say you believe then it's really doubtful you really believe it so if you believe you're not good enough your mind is going to find ways to validate that for you it's going to find ways to sort of sabotage what you're doing or you know make sure those results validate who you believe you are so what do you do about this well the first thing, and this is, you know, based on my experience in the past and, you know, the same type of doubts that everyone has. Well, you first identify the desire to improve your confidence and to decrease your self-doubt. In other words, you have to identify that as something you're going to work on. This is why I call it a skill set, because you've got to first identify that I have a desire to improve my confidence and decrease that amount of self-doubt that I have, that inner belief that I have. Then you understand that you don't overcome self-doubt. You increase your self-confidence by building something bigger than your doubts. Let me say that again. And I, you know, I'm just giving this from my perspective. So maybe sort of think about it in your own life. You don't just overcome self-doubt. You've got to get past that. You don't overcome self-doubt. you increase your self-confidence that you act on by building something bigger than your doubt. That's why successful people, you know, they want and they desire bigger challenges than they, you know, so that they can overcome them and grow. You should want to become bigger than your problems and bigger than your doubts. So, you know, wanting less challenges and your life to be easier versus wanting bigger challenges is a key mindset of successful people. Because bigger challenges will always lead to changing your beliefs and increasing your success. I hope that makes sense. Because remember, your thoughts and beliefs create actions that then lead to your experiences creating results. And you're either increasing or reinforcing your belief at all times. So the question is, are you reinforcing your beliefs of doubt or are you reinforcing these beliefs with your actions, creating new beliefs? Does that make sense? So you got to be looking at ways that you can increase your confidence to overcome these self And the solution is to just simply create new experiences You use this skill of confidence to create new experiences that will create new wins And these small wins, they add up over time. These small wins start to stack up and get bigger than your doubts. You know, Alex Ramosi talks a lot about stacking wins. It's, you know, you may know someone. I'm going to give you an example. Some of you may know people that are very confident and they exude confidence, but they don't really have the wins stacked up to back it up. Does that make sense? And so if you're doubting yourself and your confidence is low, the key is to stack up some small wins. That's why little wins are so important. So many times we're trying to do something huge and big in life, but we don't realize the power of those small wins that you can stack up that will build your confidence, that'll slowly create new experiences, that'll help you to increase your self-worth, your self-esteem, your self-confidence, and reduce that doubt that you have. So self-confidence is being eroded while you, you know, I'm sorry, self-confidence is being built while you take action. Now, let me just give you a little warning here. Self-confidence is constantly being torn down when you break small promises to yourself. What is the thing that affects your confidence the most? It's when you tell yourself you're going to do it and you don't do it. So you need to stop breaking these little promises you make to yourself. And you know what I mean? It's like, I'm going to go to the gym. I'm going to start on Monday. I'm going to start doing more sales calls. I'm going to recommit myself to, you know, getting communication or posting on social media or meeting with my team or holding people accountable. And then you don't do it because something comes up. What's happening is subconsciously, you're constantly validating that you don't follow through. And not following through with your word, even to others, not doing the activities you set out to do because you don't feel like it or because you're not in the mood, it destroys your confidence and it increases your self-doubt. So I talk all the time about, you know, how you do anything is how you do everything. If you say you're going to do something, you've got to do it, not just because you want to be a person of your word, but because subconsciously you're increasing all this self-doubt and you're destroying your confidence. And you can increase your confidence by creating wins and keeping these small promises that you've made to yourself. Eating right, working out, finishing what you start. This is why I love the quote from, you know, from, I guess a lot of people have used it now that I just mentioned, which is how you do anything is how you do everything. You keep your promises, period. You act in spite of your mood. You do things when you don't feel like doing them because you told yourself you're going to do them. And we talked in this last episode about getting clarity and having your vision and making clarity and then making decisions. But the whole part of decisions is making a commitment and a resolve to do it no matter what. So it's super, super important that you increase your self-confidence by doing the things you say you're going to do in stacking these small wins. Now, the other thing you've got to realize is that you don't need external things. And this is the thing I want you to really listen to for me. You don't need external things or validation to build self-confidence. I can promise you that you can build self-confidence without external influence. It's a myth that you need things to accomplish or things to have or other people to accept you Stop looking for your self outside yourself Stop thinking about how you can increase your confidence every time someone else validates you. Confidence is something you build internally. You have to realize that this battle for increasing confidence and reducing your doubts, it's inside you. It's in your mind. It's outside influences are things that do not change that. That's why when you let those things affect you, successful people, I'll give you an example. Successful people are like icebergs. If you've ever heard that analogy, an iceberg, 80% of an iceberg in the water is under the water. And that's why icebergs can move against the wind because the currents underneath the water are moving that iceberg. Even though you see this massive structure above the water that's an iceberg, still 80 to 90 percent of an iceberg is underwater and is being moved by the currents inside, down deep in the water. So this is why some people have achieved success only to lose it. Because on the exterior, they have confidence, but internally they don't. Their internal mindset is not increasing confidence and reducing self-doubt. So here's the thing. You've got to listen to me real closely here. You've got to focus on creating confidence and believe internally that you want it to last. And you can do this through keeping promises, creating small wins, seeking your confidence internally, not externally. And I think it's so important for you to understand And the whole point of this, and I know this was just kind of a random riff that I kind of was jumping on here with an episode, is that there is a big difference in two completely separate factors that are working on you in your day-to-day life. One is your ability to develop the skill of confidence. And the other is your focus on reducing the self-doubt that you have internally. Both of these things you can work on internally, and they kind of go hand in hand to the degree that as you increase your self-confidence and you act on that, your new experiences will reduce that self-doubt. That belief that you have that you're good enough that you can do it and things like that, that will only reduce and go away as you create new experiences based on working on that confidence. So remember it's an internal game that you need to work on the internal game your inner world That's what's going to create the results in your outer world Stop trying to get all that exterior and work on your inner game. You can create this. I believe it I believe you can do this. You've got a lot of potential inside you, you know, les brown every time I had him speak for me He used to say, you know, you have greatness inside of you But you've got to recognize that and you've got to build it. You've got to work it like a muscle and I truly believe that if you challenge yourself and you work on unleashing that potential, you will increase your confidence, you'll take action, you'll create new experiences, and you will increase your internal worth, reducing that self-doubt that you have that creeps up on you subconsciously throughout the day and throughout your business. So that's my message for you. I hope that helps you a little bit. Going into the weekend here, I hope it's something that'll give you some inspiration and motivation to start working on things inside your life that you can create more certainty with.
