Gratitude as a Strategy: How to Use It to Transform Your Life

Listen

George Wright III opens this episode of The Daily Mastermind with a quote from Albert Schweitzer: "Do something for somebody every day for which you do not get paid." It sets the tone perfectly for a conversation that reframes gratitude not as a feel-good afterthought but as a deliberate, powerful strategy anyone can deploy to reduce stress, build resilience, and create a fuller life.

If you've thought of gratitude as something you're supposed to feel when things go well, this episode will shift your perspective. George makes the case that gratitude is a tool you actively use, especially when things are hard.

What Gratitude Actually Means

Gratitude is more than saying thank you or counting your blessings. George breaks it into two distinct parts. The first is recognizing and appreciating the benefits, gifts, and experiences you've received. The second is acknowledging that those things came from something or someone outside yourself, and then choosing to express that appreciation proactively.

That second part is where most people stop short. True gratitude is active, not passive. It's a practice you build, not just a feeling you wait for.

Why Gratitude Changes Your Brain

One reason George calls gratitude a strategy is that it produces measurable neurological effects. Brain scans have shown that specific areas of the brain are activated during acts and emotions of gratitude. The chemical reactions that follow reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Perhaps more importantly, practicing gratitude increases your brain's sensitivity to future experiences of gratitude, meaning the more you do it, the more naturally it comes.

It's really tough to focus on things you're grateful for and be negative at the exact same time.

This is why gratitude functions as an intervention, not just a mood. You can deliberately engage it to interrupt negative thought cycles and redirect your attention.

The Seven Benefits George Outlines

George walks through seven concrete benefits of a gratitude practice:

1. Abundance and Attraction: What you focus on grows. Practicing gratitude draws more positive emotions, energy, and experiences toward you, fueling motivation and momentum. 2. Attitude and Mindset: A gratitude practice reduces stress, anxiety, and depression, equipping you to handle the challenges that arise daily in work and life. 3. Perspective and Filter: As Dr. Wayne Dyer said, "when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change." Gratitude makes you more patient, more understanding, and more capable of finding solutions. 4. Happiness and Health: Scientific studies link gratitude practice to stronger immune systems, better sleep, and higher overall happiness. George puts it simply: happiness comes from wanting what you have rather than having what you want. 5. Inspiration and Influence: Gratitude pulls your focus off your own problems and allows you to serve others, which inspires those around you and gives you a sense of making a difference. 6. Leadership Development: The best leaders set an example. If you want positive, grateful people around you, expressing genuine gratitude is the most direct way to cultivate that environment. 7. Strong Relationships: Gratitude counteracts the negative emotions that erode relationships. It generates love, compassion, and encouragement, the building blocks of lasting connections.

How to Start a Gratitude Practice

George's advice is simple: pick one practice and do it consistently. Here are the approaches he recommends:

  • Engage in acts of service
  • Write thank-you notes
  • Keep a gratitude journal (or use a gratitude app that prompts you daily)
  • Focus intentionally on key relationships
  • Express appreciation to people throughout your day

The most important step is identifying a specific time each day to name what you're grateful for. Morning is powerful: if your first act after waking is to list three or four things you're thankful for, you set your brain on a positive trajectory before the pressures of the day hit. If instead you reach for your phone or immediately replay your problems, you go down a different path.

Action Steps

  • Choose one gratitude practice from the list above and commit to doing it at the same time every day for two weeks.
  • Each morning, before checking your phone, name three things you are genuinely grateful for. Write them down if possible.
  • Find one person in your life this week and express specific, sincere appreciation to them, the way George's business partner Patrick Baker does naturally in every conversation.
  • When you feel stress or negativity building, use gratitude as a deliberate intervention: pause and list what is going right, even if the list is short.
  • Over time, build toward proactively expressing gratitude in relationships, not just privately journaling it.

A Strategy Worth Starting Today

Gratitude is not a soft skill or a luxury for easy times. It is a strategy with documented mental, emotional, and physical benefits. George's core message is that you don't have to wait until life feels good to practice it; you deploy it precisely when life feels hard.

It's never too late to start living the life you were meant to live. Whether you've never kept a gratitude journal or haven't thought about this in years, starting today changes things. The science says so, and the experience of those who practice it consistently confirms it.

Welcome back to the Daily Mastermind, George Wright III. I am your host and I'm here to give you a little bit more inspiration and motivation. I hope you're having a great day. Let's start off today with the Daily Mastermind quote of the day. You need to go to Instagram if you want to get these every single day. Troy does a phenomenal job of getting some high quality HD pics with a great quote and today's quote is from albert schweitzer albert schweitzer and the quote is do something for somebody every day for which you do not get paid do something for somebody every day for which you don't get paid i love that i love that that's actually really good tie it's funny how these always tie right into the topic for the day because it's been a long hot minute since i've talk to you about gratitude. So gratitude is absolutely a strategy. You need to stop thinking of that as just something that you need to do and think of it as a strategy. So what is gratitude and why do thought leaders talk so much about having a gratitude practice? A gratitude practice, right? I've learned over time in my life that gratitude, it's an amazing strategy that you can use to reduce or eliminate stress, anxiety, depression, or even insomnia, to be honest. But more importantly, it's an excellent practice to increase your overall happiness and fulfillment in life. So I want to talk to you today about this and discuss some of the benefits of gratitude, maybe give you some suggestions and ideas on how do you cultivate it more in your life and create a more ongoing practice, gratitude practice. And I think it's important to note that gratitude actually has a much deeper meaning than just being thankful for the things that you have. There's kind of two parts that I see in being truly grateful. First is that you appreciate and recognize things, benefits, gifts, and stuff that you've gotten in your life. But second, there's an acknowledgement of these things coming from something or someone outside of ourselves and our willingness to give back and express our gratitude proactively and our feelings of gratitude. So why is it so important? Why do we always talk about this adoption of gratitude and living and attitude of gratitude? Well, it's important to understand that gratitude is not just an emotion that we experience or an attitude that we adopt in our lives. Gratitude literally causes changes in your brain, and it can affect all areas of your life in a very positive way. Sometimes it helps to understand there's a scientific reason for this. It's so important when we're trying to create an amazing life, or if you're struggling to deal with stress or anxiety or negative emotions in your life, to implement this practice of gratitude. You know, scientists have shown in the brain scans of individuals that specific areas of the brain are affected when individuals participate in acts or emotions of gratitude The chemical reaction that occurs can reduce stress anxiety and depression And it also something that causes an increased sensitivity to future experiences of gratitude Now this shows that it's more than just a practice. It's more than just an emotion. And there's so many benefits you can get from it. That's why I call it a strategy. because it's really tough. If you've ever tried this, it's really tough to focus on things you're grateful for and be negative at the exact same time. I don't know if you've ever experienced that. So maybe rather than thinking, oh, when you're having a tough time, you need to be grateful. It's really hard to do. Maybe you should think of it as a strategy that you will implement in order to pull you out of places of stress and anxiety or even just to take your life to the next level. So here are, I've got to outline for you seven, I've covered these before, basic benefits that you can get from this power and strategy of gratitude. Number one, abundance and attraction. I've always said that what you focus on grows. When you practice gratitude, you will attract more positive emotions, energy, experiences, and things into your life. This is going to lead to more motivation and kind of snowball and give you more drive to accomplish things and make it through what you're going through. The second benefit is your attitude or your mindset. One of the most important resources an entrepreneur can have in business or in life is a positive attitude. But an attitude of gratitude can only help to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression ultimately if you implement it. It'll help you deal with all these situations that arise in your day-to-day life, whether it's balance or things that you're trying to do. So that's an attitude and mindset benefit. The third benefit is your perspective or your filter. Because when you're having a positive attitude, it's going to give you, or let's put it this way, it's critical to help you change your perspective on how you're identifying and overcoming your challenges. You know, Dr. Wayne Dyer has this amazing quote I love when he says, when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change. And I truly believe that. I can tell you from experience that when you have gratitude practice, you will see situations in a different light. You're more patient. You're more understanding. You're more capable of creating solutions. This means when you're in that frame of mind when things hit you, you look at them differently. And this leads you to have more success because we all know that when we approach things with a positive attitude, we're going to get a better result, right? So that's a benefit of your perspective and filter. The fourth benefit would be your happiness and health. Look, the positive effects on your health, happiness and immune system are a proven fact when you have more gratitude in your life. Science studies have shown that individuals practicing gratitude have a stronger immune system, they have better healing, they get better quality sleep, they happier overall and I know that happiness comes from wanting what you have rather than having what you want And it much easier to do when you practice gratitude regularly Train your brain Look, when your brain turns on in the morning, the first thing you do, identify three or four things you're grateful for, and immediately you start it down this path. If when you wake up, you grab your phone like most people do, or you remember what problems you have for the day, you immediately go down the wrong path. So there's scientific effects on your health and happiness by having gratitude. Now, the fifth benefit is that influence and inspiration that you get. More and more thought leaders are acknowledging that you'll create a better life and you'll have better impact on others and feel you're making a difference in the world with gratitude. Practicing gratitude and serving others is an excellent way to inspire and influence. And that's what a lot of people are focused on right now. It's also a great way to kind of take your focus off yourself. You know, I talk a lot about it. We get so wrapped up in our own issues that sometimes we forget that just simply taking the focus off yourself is a way to make progress. And I really, really, really, really recommend that you think about that on a day-to-day basis. The sixth benefit is leadership development. Look, by serving others and creating impact, you'll also be able to develop as a leader. So true leadership comes from setting an example of what you want others to emulate around you. And if you truly want to surround yourself with positive, happy people, then the best way to do this is to practice and express your gratitude to the people that you're around. I have a business partner in an apparel company, Patrick Baker. Shout out to Patrick. He's a guy that is just the picture perfect example of gratitude. Like I can't get off a call with that guy or go do lunch or something without him saying, hey, thankful, so grateful, so grateful for you in my life, so grateful for your help, so grateful for your patience or for your friendship. You know, having that gratitude expressed to others is huge. It's so huge. And the seventh benefit that I have that I want to mention to you is that it's really going to help strengthen relationships. The quality of your relationships can be significantly impact by gratitude. Are you showing gratitude to the people around you? Most relationships struggle when negative emotions are involved, like jealousy and envy, cynicism, or even anger. But gratitude is shown to actually create and attract positive emotions, and it'll shift the average individual into a positive state of someone that people want to be around. This results in more expressions of love, compassion, positivity, encouragement. All of these things will grow your relationships. So I want you to really think through that. This idea of gratitude as a strategy It's gonna create abundance and attraction. It's gonna give you a better attitude and mindset. It's gonna give you a better perspective and filter on situations. It's gonna give you better health and happiness. It gonna inspire and influence others and it gonna help you develop as a leader and develop strong relationships There just I mean those are just a few of the benefits that you can experience by practicing gratitude Remember there are mental emotional and even physical benefits that impact your life with this strategy So let me, you know, let me give you just a couple of ideas of how you can start a practice. And these are things that I've done you might want to do, but pick one that you'll do consistently. Remember, consistency is the key. You can either engage in acts of service. You can write thank you notes. You can keep a gratitude journal. There's actually some really good apps, gratitude apps, where just every day it prompts you to write down two or three things you're grateful for. You can focus on key relationships. You can express your appreciation to people throughout the day. These are all things you can do. What I'd like you to do, and I want you to do me this favor, is I want you to try to identify a time in your life that you can identify the things that you're grateful for. and what I mean by that is like maybe in the morning maybe in the afternoon maybe in the evening find a time in your life sometime during your day sometime during your week whenever it is that you are going to specifically spend time identifying listing and even writing things that you're grateful for or practicing things you're grateful for then I want you to really find a way to proactively express gratitude in your life and I hope this topic is something that you will try you will work on because it may be counterintuitive to you. It may be hard when you're having negativity or down times in your life to practice gratitude, but I promise you it's a strategy to change things. Just like moving and exercising is a way to change your mind and body, gratitude is also. And I want you to know that I'm here. I'm here to answer any questions you have, help you with struggles you may have, and it's never too late to start living that life you're meant to live. It doesn't matter whether you've done this in the past. It doesn't matter if people think you're grateful or not. You just need to start. Because if you start, you're going to make a difference in your life. I promise you that. Now, I want to ask you a favor. I want you to do me a favor and share this episode. Just copy the link and send it or share it with somebody that you feel like that you can make a significant impact on. I don't do sponsorships or commercials or anything on the podcast, but I do ask that you share it. And if this is something that's helped you and you feel comfortable with it, you share it with somebody because you don't know who might be out there struggling. You don't know who might need some help. And whether it's just the concept, the ideas, the strategies, or just having that talking in their life, people need the positivity. And that's why I do the podcast. So hit me up on The Daily Mastermind Instagram or Facebook. Share the episode. I'll look forward to talking with you again tomorrow. This is George Wright III.
