Confidence Comes from Courage Part 1

Have you ever waited to feel confident before making a move—starting a business, launching a project, or speaking on stage? What if you discovered that confidence is not a prerequisite, but a result? In this episode of The Daily Mastermind, we dive into the reality behind confidence and how to build it with one powerful ingredient: courage.

Confidence Comes from Courage Part 1

Welcome back to the Daily Mastermind. George Wright III here with your daily dose of inspiration, motivation, and education. And today we're digging into the truth about confidence—what it is, what it’s not, and how to truly build it. Because confidence doesn't come before the action. It's built through courage.

So let's start off with that. Look, there's a myth about confidence, and I’ve applied this throughout my life as well. It's always like, "Just lead with confidence," but in the back of your mind, your subconscious is telling you you're not confident, right? Most people wait though, and they act after they feel the confidence—and that's the problem.

See, the truth is you don't get confidence before you start, and you can't just make it up. You build it after you start. That's the key. That's the secret. You do not start with confidence. You get confidence after you start.

Successful people don't have it all together. They don't have all the answers before they launch. They just start. And most successful people you know started before they were sure about the outcome. I can attest to this myself, and I think you know it too—you can't wait for confidence.

In fact, you don't need confidence to start. What you need is courage. Courage is what's going to help you get started. Confidence will come after that.

The Power of Courage Over Confidence

I could give you the example of this podcast—The Daily Mastermind. You're listening to this. We’re 1200 episodes in, five or six years now. I can’t even keep track—it’s been so long. But I definitely did not have confidence in podcasting.

Now, maybe I had some confidence in myself, but I didn’t have confidence in podcasting. And if I had waited around until I had confidence, and knowledge, and belief, I would have never started this podcast. The fact of the matter is I had courage. Courage is what got me started.

So what is courage really? Courage is acting in the presence of fear. It’s not the absence of fear. This is the part you have to understand. It’s a decision to move forward regardless of whether you’re afraid.

It’s one of the reasons I have the poster and the Prosperity Pillars. And the third one is: Act in spite of your mood. Act despite how you feel.

Micro vs. Macro Courage

Let me give you some examples. There are ways of having “micro courage”—daily actions like posting, emailing, asking questions, or getting in front of your ideal prospects.

Then there’s “macro courage.” These are things that take more boldness—like investing, launching a product, or public speaking. Jumping up on stage—that takes a lot of courage.

Mark Twain had a great quote. He said, “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear—not absence of fear.” Let me say that again. Courage is the resistance to fear or mastery of fear. It’s not the absence of fear.

You don’t wait until you have courage and there’s no fear and then act because of confidence. That’s not how it works. Now, as you build your confidence, fear will start to diminish at times. But I can tell you—many times, even though I’ve paid some of the world’s biggest names to speak for me, and I’ve spent millions of dollars on professional speakers—I was never a speaker.

I was very afraid to jump on stage—many times—and I did it anyway. And what happens is you start to stack wins. Your courage pushes you into areas you’re not comfortable with. You’re fearful, but then confidence begins to follow.

Stacking Wins to Build Confidence

This is what I would call stacking wins. Alex Hormozi talks about this a lot. It's the idea that when you stack wins, it overcomes doubt and builds true confidence.

How? Because the momentum of action and courage fuels belief—and your belief is what powers your confidence. Every win, no matter how small, reinforces that belief in yourself. That’s what real confidence is: self-belief earned through action.

Now, what’s the actual definition of a win?

You might think it’s only hitting your ultimate goal. But that’s wrong. You need to redefine what a win really is. A win is taking action, getting feedback, and doing it again. That’s where the shift in identity and belief begins.

Dopamine, Psychology, and Confidence

Here’s the bottom line: when you define what a win is—when you set up your own rules for what counts as progress—your psychology kicks in.

Why? Because dopamine is released with every win. Dopamine helps you create habits. And when wins become habitual, your confidence becomes automatic. You’re literally training yourself to win.

So tell yourself: a win is action, feedback, and iteration.

Take action. Get feedback. Do it again. That’s a win. That’s how you start stacking them.

Jim Rohn once said, “Success is a few simple disciplines practiced every day.” Success doesn’t come from giant milestones. It comes from small disciplines, repeated.

Activity Over Outcome

Let’s apply this practically.

Maybe you’re waiting for a huge revenue goal. But instead, you should focus on wins. Why? Because wins build confidence, and confidence builds results.

For example, if you pitch a client every single day, that’s a win. Do that 30 times in a month, and your confidence is going to explode. Trust me.

That’s why in my own companies, running multiple sales floors with thousands of reps, I focus on activity—not just results.

When salespeople stop selling, they lose confidence. And when they lose confidence, they sell even less. So we focus on action—making calls, sending messages, starting conversations.

I incentivize activity—because activity breeds courage, courage builds wins, and wins fuel confidence.

The Confidence Formula (Cycle)

Now let’s break it down into a formula. I call it the Confidence Cycle, and it’s very similar to what I also refer to as the Belief Cycle.

Here it is:

  1. Start with Courage
  2. Take Action
  3. Get a Small Win
  4. Build Confidence
  5. That leads to more Courage
  6. Repeat

That’s the Confidence Cycle. Courage leads to action. Action leads to a win. The win builds belief. That belief creates confidence. And confidence loops you back to even more courage.

You do this cycle enough times? That’s called momentum.

Most people never get there because they wait until they’re “ready.” But when you wait, you’re stacking Ls—you’re stacking losses, not wins.

Set Courage-Based Goals

So here's what I want you to do now that you understand the cycle. This is the strategy I want you to play with:

Set three courage-based goals this week.
Notice, I didn’t say “get three wins.” I said set courage-based goals—goals that require you to take bold action regardless of the outcome. Your focus should be on action, not results. When you focus on action, you begin to train your brain, body, and behavior to respond with movement, not hesitation.

This will help you start stacking those wins—and as we’ve established, that’s where real confidence is built.

Focus on Activity, Not Just Outcome

This is exactly why I’ve always focused on activity in my sales organizations. With thousands of sales reps, I’ve seen how quickly confidence can be lost when activity drops.

That’s why I reward behavior—not just results. Calls made. Demos given. Messages sent. These are metrics of momentum. And momentum is a powerful force. When you feel momentum building, your confidence skyrockets.

It works the same way in life, business, and even personal growth.

So start this week by setting your three courage-based goals. Execute them. And when you do, call it a win.

Now, this is just part one of a deeper dive into the topic of confidence. Tomorrow, we’ll get into how to practice courage daily—you’ll walk away with tools, strategies, and examples to build your authority, your confidence, and your identity through repeated action.
