Are the People Around You Moving You Toward Your Goals

Listen

George Wright III opens this episode of The Daily Mastermind with a direct challenge: take a hard look at the people surrounding you and ask whether they are pulling you forward or holding you back. It is a question most people avoid, but George argues it may be the most important one you can ask as you pursue your goals.

This episode is part of George's ongoing series on the Prosperity Pillars, 12 principles drawn from decades of mentoring and working alongside leading success experts. The first and most foundational pillar sets the tone for everything else: I create my life.

Why You Are the Only One Who Can Create Your Life

Nobody is coming to save you. That is not a harsh statement; it is a liberating one. Too many people are waiting for the economy to shift, for politics to settle, for someone to show up and hand them an opportunity. George makes clear that the waiting is the real problem, not fear, not uncertainty, not anxiety. Everyone has those. Even the most successful people carry fears and doubts. What separates those who move forward is the decision to act anyway.

When you decide that you create your life, something shifts. You stop looking outward for permission and start recognizing the talents, abilities, and insights you already carry. Forward motion builds skills, creates lessons, and connects you with the right people. Choosing a path and moving matters more than finding the perfect answer first.

Are the People in Your Life Moving You Closer or Further From Your Goals

Once you accept that you are the creator of your results, you have to reckon with a harder truth: the people around you are either amplifying that creation or quietly undermining it. George shares a moment when a mentor reframed how he thought about relationships by asking a simple question about a person: what are the stats? In other words, is that person contributing to the things you want to build, or taking away from them?

Are the people in your life increasing or decreasing the value of your life? Are the people in your life moving you closer or further from your goals?

This is not about cutting people off carelessly. It is about becoming honest with yourself about whether the relationships in your life are producing forward momentum or draining it. George points out that people often affect you subconsciously, even when they have no conscious intention of holding you back.

What to Look For: Aligned, Accepting, and Empowering

George offers a clear three-part framework for evaluating the people in your circle.

Alignment. Are they aligned with what you are trying to accomplish? They do not have to be pursuing identical goals, but they should share a commitment to growth, learning, and becoming a better version of themselves.

Acceptance. Do they accept the path you have chosen? Many people in your life are not consciously trying to redirect you, but subconsciously pull you toward different choices. Real support means respecting your direction, even when it differs from theirs.

Empowerment. Do they build you up? The people worth keeping close are the ones who energize you rather than deplete you, who reinforce your belief in what you are building rather than casting doubt on it.

Why Standing Still Is Not an Option

In life, you're either moving forward or you're moving backwards. There's no such thing as just standing still.

This applies to both your goals and your relationships. Every person in your inner circle is either a catalyst or a brake. Recognizing that is not cynicism; it is clarity. George draws on Napoleon Hill's concept of the mastermind to illustrate what the right relationships look like in practice.

What Napoleon Hill Got Right About Your Inner Circle

George explicitly cites Napoleon Hill's definition of a mastermind in this episode:

Napoleon Hill talked about the mastermind as two or more people joining the spirit of harmony moving towards a common goal. And that common goal may be life mastery. It might be becoming the best version of yourself.

If the people around you are not interested in becoming better, if they are working to keep you from the activities that matter to you, they are not your mastermind. They are friction. The goal is to build a circle of people who support your energy, challenge you to grow, and celebrate your progress.

Action Steps

  • Decide this week that you create your life. Make it a resolved belief, not just an intention, and write it down where you will see it.
  • Audit your inner circle using the three criteria: are the key people around you aligned with your values, accepting of your path, and actively empowering your growth?
  • For any relationship that consistently drains your energy or pulls you away from your goals, consider reducing that influence in your life, even if gradually.
  • Seek out people who are committed to personal development, whether through a mastermind group, a community, or a mentor relationship.
  • Take one concrete action today toward your goals. Motion creates momentum, and momentum changes everything.

The people you allow into your daily life shape your trajectory more than most people realize. Choosing your circle is itself an act of creating your life. It is never too late to start living the life you were meant to live, and surrounding yourself with the right people is one of the most powerful ways to begin.

All right, welcome back to The Daily Mastermind. My name is George Wright III. For those of you that are just joining us for the first time, I'm glad you're here. You know, my goal with The Daily Mastermind when I created it almost, geez, almost 900, well, 900 episodes ago, was to create a daily dose of inspiration, motivation, and education that can help you to create your best life, really unleash your potential and move forward in the direction of your goals. And so I hope that's something that I can do for you here today. It's Monday morning and I want to kind of ask you if you feel like you're moving forward this year towards your goals. Do you feel like you're making progress? Do you feel like you have the path, the strategy, the peace of mind, the clarity, the vision that you need to move forward? Because if you don't, you've got to make some time to make that plan happen. Now, for those of you that know me, you know that I have been mentored and trained and also done marketing for some of the greatest minds and thought leaders and success experts out there over the last 25 to 30 years. And I created this poster. I put it in a poster, but this poster that I call the Prosperity Pillars. And it's 12 principles that I've kind of accumulated over time, over the years, from all of the mentoring I've received, the experts I've been around. And I believe that it really sums up the foundation of the principles you need in order to truly be successful. So every Monday morning for the next 12 weeks, I really want to emphasize, excuse me, and remind you of those 12 principles while I add a little value to your day. And today I want to kind of start out with the first one. And for those of you that really have not seen it or been around it, you can go to thedailymastermind.com or dailymastermind.com, which is the website. And you can look and check out the poster, get a free PDF if you'd like. But the first pillar is I create my life. And I can't think of anything better to actually really emphasize today on Monday for the beginning of your week than I create my life. because, you know, look, I don't know where you're at in your life. I don't know if you feel like you're crushing your goals and you want to go to the next level, or if you feel like you're looking for direction. You know, a lot of people are just waiting. They're waiting for something to change. They're waiting for the politics to end. They're waiting for the economy to turn. They waiting for someone to offer them an opportunity And if you like most people that I believe are listening to this podcast you realize that nobody coming to save you Nobody is coming to create the solutions that you looking for And the solutions you looking for you going to eventually realize are not outside yourself In other words the solutions you're looking for are inside you. You're the one who can find and direct and create that vision, that path, that clarity for you. You're uniquely qualified to do that. Now, you may be dealing with fear. You may be dealing with anxiety. You might have uncertainty. But guess what? That's not your problem because everyone has that. Even people that are super successful have fears and anxiety and uncertainty. The problem is your failure to act. The problem is your failure to be aware of the power, the potential, and the solutions that you do have inside yourself. You just need to find strategies to help you move forward and realize that no one's coming to save you. Your future is only going to happen if you decide that I create my life. I'm the person that's going to create the solutions. And when you do that, you get this sense of empowerment and you realize that you do have the talents, the abilities, and the insights to create your life. Now, maybe it's hard for you to recognize those. Maybe it's hard for you to develop those. But that's where mentoring and masterminds and things like that come in. So I want you to think about this today. I want you to really this week think about the fact that you need to make a decision that you create your life, that only you can create the solutions because you are uniquely qualified to understand your surroundings. But it requires you to take action. See, I've learned over time that the only way you truly create your life is through forward motion, through action. because actions increase your skills. Actions create failures, which you can learn from. Actions get you in front of the right people. Actions help you to figure out what's right and what's wrong. It's not about finding the right answer. Most times, every path you choose could be right or wrong. It's just about choosing a path and moving forward. But I want to take just a couple minutes today, maybe just two more minutes, and I want to talk to you about one critical factor that I think you might be overlooking, and that is the people you surround yourself with. Now that's one of our prosperity pillars, but I'm not going to go down the road of that today because what I really want to try to emphasize to you is, are the people in your life increasing or decreasing the value of your life? Are the people in your life moving you closer or further from your goals? You know, I have a lot of friends family associates that I talk to all the time You know it partially because I inquisitive as to how they doing And it partially because they come to me all the time with you know questions and thoughts and need and support. But the bottom line is this. I heard someone say a while ago, you know, one of my mentors said a while ago, he said, I mean, we were talking about a situation in business, right? And they said, is that person, or actually what he said is he said, what are the stats you have on that person? And I was like, stats, what are you talking about stats? He said, well, what are the stats? What are the results? Is that person contributing or taking away from the things you want to create in your life? And it made me really think a little bit differently. See, a lot of times we think about people in our lives as, are they positive? Are they successful? They support us. But at the end of the day, your surroundings, including, and most importantly, including the people you surround yourself, are either taking you towards your goals or away from your goals. It's not just about support. The bottom line is in life, you're either moving forward or you're moving backwards. There's no such thing as just standing still. So I want you to ask yourself, are the people in your life increasing or decreasing your progress? And the way to really understand this is to check, number one, are you aligned? Are they aligned with what you're trying to accomplish in your life? Do they think the same way? Do they have the same principles? Are they thinking in the same terms of what you value? Are they aligned with what you're trying to contribute in your life? Now, they don't have to necessarily be someone that is pursuing the same goals, but are they aligned in being someone who's interested in growing, in learning, in developing, into becoming a better version of themselves? Second, you know, besides alignment, are they accepting? Are they accepting of what path you've chosen? You see, because a lot of people in your life, they may not consciously do it, but they subconsciously pull you a different direction. You're trying to pursue your goals and dreams, and they're trying to influence you to go a different way. So are they accepting you of where you are? And finally, you know, do these people empower you? In other words, you want to know that individuals you surround yourself build you up because that's what you want to do for the people around you. So are these people aligned with you? Do they accept you? And do they empower you? Because as an individual entrepreneur, I always try to do that for others. I try to align myself with the right people, accept them for who they are, and empower them to pursue their goals That the whole concept behind the mastermind You know Napoleon and Hill talked about the mastermind as two or more people joining the spirit of harmony moving towards a common goal And that common goal may be life mastery It might be becoming the best version of yourself It might be becoming better And if you have people around you that are not trying to become better, if you have people around you that are trying to keep you from doing the activities that you want to do, those are not the people you need around you. You need people around you that are going to help empower you towards your goals. People that are going to help you feel supported, not detracted. They're going to build up your energy, not take it away. So that's the thing I want you to think about this week, because if you choose and decide and you're resolved to the fact that you create your life, which is the first and most important prosperity pillar, then you've got to look at the people that you're surrounding yourself with. Because whether you consciously think it or not, subconsciously, They're affecting you. They're taking you further from your goal. So that's my message for today. Now, I want to do something to kind of help you and empower you. I'm doing something a little bit different here. Starting this week, I'm going to start putting together a program that's not going to cost a penny. It's absolutely free, just like the Daily Mastermind without sponsors. And this program is designed to send you once a week on Friday, a newsletter. And the newsletter will include any blogs that we have out, links to all the episodes in case you missed them on the podcast. It'll include a free PDF of these 12 pillars, this Prosperity Pillars poster, and a whole bunch of other goodies. The point is not so much what's involved in it. It's a commitment for you to get support moving forward because I want to be one of those individuals that helps you and supports you in your path. So you can go to dailymastermind.com or you can go to the link in the show notes for this podcast. In fact, I'll probably route our domain jointheevolution.com to this page as well. And all you need to do is put your name and email address in and opt in. The bottom line is this. If you opt into the community and you enter your name and email, I'll send you all these goodies. I'll get you on our newsletter. You can unsubscribe anytime. If it's not bringing you the value, I'd encourage you to unsubscribe. But if you want to subscribe to this content, that is the one source that I'm going to use in order to put out everything that we have to offer to support you in your life. So that's my message for today. I hope you have an amazing day. Do me a favor and share the show. Share the message so that we can help others and we can build the mastermind community to help each other. I look forward to talking with you more tomorrow. Have an amazing day. .
